McElroy of Oglethorpe and Pike Counties



According to The History of Pike County, Georgia 1820-1989, the family began in Amwrica with John McElroy, born ca 1690 in Baltimore County, Maryland. He married Frances in 1712 Baltimore County, and died after 23 November 1765 in Johnston Co., North Carolina.

William McElroy, Revolutionary War Patriot, a son of the above John McElroy, was born 23 December 1717 in Baltimore County, Maryland. According to the book, he died 1802 in Oglethorpe Co., but this is not the case, no record found for him. He married Ghaskey who died 1784-1788 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

John McElroy, son of above William, was born ca 1742 in Craven County, North Carolina and 1804 in Oglethorpe Co. He married (2) Sarah Sims who died after 1805 in Oglethorpe Co. JOHN McELROY of Oglethorpe Co., 4/2/1803:23/1804, p. 132-134. "Having given to all my children that is at this time married left me, one bed and sheets and other property, I make no further provision for them except Rachal Hancock, my daughter, to whom I give one and calf. To my son Henry McElroy one bed and sheets when he marries. My son, Edward McElroy bed and sheets when he marries. To beloved daugh Easter McElroy bed and sheets when she marries. To Sniggers McElroy a bed sheets and a musquit gun. To daughter Patsy? McElroy a bed and sheets a brown filly, whose first colt is to go to my son Sniggers McElroy. To grandson John Hartsfield a white heifer yearling. To my beloved wife All the rest of my estate during her life or widowhood, then to be divided long the children, being sure that each have a good feather bed".... etc. Executors: Brother James McElroy and Wiley Sims. Witnesses: Charles Sims, Jr., Thomas W. Scott.

John McElroy gave a receipt to the estate of John Stewart dated 23 October 1792 in Wilkes Co., and he was a purchaser in the estate of David Bridges on 19 Fewbruary 1790. In 1790, John McElroy was listed as a Constable in Wilkes County.

Oglethorpe County Deeds.

Deed Book A, page 329. Samuel McElroy, Benjamin Baldwin and Jacob Hoge are bound to Mathew Rainey, Register of Probates, for $5,000 on 11 February 1796. Condition of the obligation is that if Samuel McElroy, administrator of the property of John McElroy, deceased, make inventory, make account of her actings, pay debts, if a will be found it to be proved, and deliver Letters of Administration, then this to be void, else to remain full force.

Oglethorpe Deed Book E, page 76. 1 March 1803 William McElroy to Gabriel Jones, both of Oglethorpe Co. for $400, land on Grove Creek in said county, 100 acres beginning corner pine, N 46 W 42 chains to corner post oak, N 70 W 9 chains 50 links to corner black oak, S 31 E 12 chains to corner hickory, N 63 E 42 chains to corner pine, S 53 E 17 chains to beginning, adj. Richard Hartsfield, Enoch, Embry, Zachariah Laurence and John McElroy, being part of 400 acres surveyed and granted to John McElroy.

Oglethorpe Co. Deed Book D, page 476. 25 December 1802. Reuben McElroy to Richard Hartsfield, both of Oglethorpe Co., land on E side of Grove Creek of Broad River, beginning at Grove Creek on Wiley Sims' line, N on Hartsfield's line, 40 acres, being part of a tract granted to Reuben McElroy.

Land Grant dated 7 March 1794, Oglethorpe Co, Grove Creek. Oglethorpe Deed Book E, page 20. 10 December 1805, Henry McElroy to William Andrews, both of Oglethorpe County, for $450., being part of a tract granted to Reuben McElroy 7 March 1794, beginning on creek at A. G. Smith's line, to corner on Joseph Embry's line, on Reubin McElroy's line to corner, N 45 W to Grove Creek, up creek to beginning, 170 acres.

  2. Edward Snicher McElroy, born 1783 in Wake County, North Carolina, died 30 June 1857 in Pike County, Georgia. He married his second cousin in Elbert County, Mary (Pollie) McElroy, born 1796.* Family was listed on 1850 Pike Co. Census.

    Oglethorpe Co. Deeds

    Deed Book E, page 372. 24 November 1806. Edward McElroy deeds to John B. Smith, both of Oglethorpe Co., 100 acres on South side of Main Clouds Creek adj. creek, lines of Freeman, James Sims, Wm Laurence, near creek meanders of creek, being originally granted to John Griffith, with improvements.
    Issue:
    1-Henry McElroy born ca 1810, died 1853 in Fayette County, buried in the Turner Cemetery in Clayton County.
    Rachel McElroy married Mr. Hancock. Easter McElroy. Sniggers McElroy. Patsy McElroy.
    2-Isaac McElroy born 1811 in Oglethorpe Co., married Caroline M. Smith on 12 September 1831 in Pike Co. Issue:
    Edward McElroy, born 1836.
    Mary E. A. McElroy, born 1843 in Pike Co. married Joshua H. Lassiter on 12 January 1860 in Pike Co, a veteran of the Civil War.
