Owen W. Massey



OWEN W. MASSEY was born in North Carolina in 1803, later removing to Bibb Co., Georgia He d. 1881 Bibb Co., Georgia. In 1850 he was a Gin Maker; also owned and operated a grist mill. At first, there was a one room shop, but later he built a new shop which contained a 120-foot shaft with pulleys. Adjoining the shop was a machine shop and foundry. He also had a blacksmith shop. The Owen Massey farm consisted of 850 acres near Macon, where the mill was located. He provided the one-room school house for the community. In addition the grist mill, he owned a saw mill East of Macon. His lovely eleven-room house featured a Sunday School room with an organ. Near the house was a smoke house and two-room servant's house. He owned eight horses and two mules which hauled lumber, four horses were usually hitched to the wagon. He also raised cattle, hogs, corn, rye and peas. Owen Massey m. Martha and they had children:
  1. BENJAMIN MASSEY b. 1839 Bibb Co., Georgia

  2. MILTON MASSEY b. 1841 Bibb Co., Georgia

  3. C. H. MASSEY b. 1843 Bibb Co., Georgia

WILLIAM T. MASSEY was b. 1818 North Carolina, d. 1863, his LWT dtd Bibb Co., Georgia (naming children of his two brothers, Owen W. Massey and Edmund Massey) came to Georgia with his brothers, Owen W. and Alvin Massey. The brothers were all Gin Makers. William m. Yancy b. 1821 in Georgia. Children:
  1. SANFORD D. MASSEY b. 1841 Bibb Co., Georgia, was a Confederate Soldier who enlisted 4/20/1861 at Macon, Georgia, Co. C, 2nd Georgia Battn, serving until 6/1863 when discharged because of disability. This was the Co. which surrendered 1865 at Appomattox, Virginia. After the War, Sanford Massey repaired cotton gins, and eventually became nearly blind because of Injuries received during the war.
  2. WILLIAM MASSEY b. 1844 Bibb Co., Georgia
  3. ORRIN E. MASSEY b. 1846 Bibb Co., Georgia m. Elizabeth Frances Massey.
  4. MARTHA MASSEY b. 1849 Bibb Co., Georgia
ALVIN MASSEY was b. 1792 in North Carolina and m. Elizabeth (b. 1800 in Virginia).
