[2] It has been said that Turner Mason, Thomas Pullen and General David Blackshear built the first three framed dwellings erected in what is now in Laurens County. These three pioneers moved to Laurens about the same time, settled in the same neighborhood and were special friends. Of course the General was more wealthy and influential than the others. My grandfather, Turner Mason, was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He emigrated to Louisville, Georgia in 1793 where he remained one year, removing to what was then Washington, afterwards Laurens County. When my grandfather, Turner Mason, moved to Georgia....communication by letter with the old home was a matter of weeks and the Georgia and Virginia members of the family got out of touch, but there were a number of eminent Virginians of the name of Mason and Turner being given names illegible to our family. We never tried to establish the connection. Father said that Senator Mason, Confederate Minister to England, was a first cousin. James Mason (above).
