Marshall of Connecticut and Georgia


THOMAS MARSHALL came to America, arriving in the New England Colony in 1633. He was a descendant of the Earl of Pembroke from Lincolnshire, England, and settled in Boston, Massachusetts, In 1635 he appears in the records as a ferry-keeper; Deacon of the First Church; a select man in 1648; and served In the Court for some years. Thomas married twice. Accompanying him to America were two sons by his first wife, Thomas and Samuel, and two daughters, Sarah and Frances. A son by his second wife, Eliekim, was killed by Indians during King Philip's War. SAMUEL MARSHALL removed to Windsor, Connecticut ca 1636, serving as a Magistrate in that town. He, too, fought in King Philips War, and after serving as Corporal, Quartermaster and Ensign, attained the rank of Captain at the Battle of Fort Narragansett, where he died with his men in 1675. He was the father of nine children, as follows:
  1. THOMAS MARSHALL, a Congregational Deacon in Windows, 2/18/1663-11/8/1735 m. 3/1685 Mary Drake (she d. 12/21/1728). They had eleven children.
        
    1. DANIEL MARSHALL, b. 1706, m. 1st, 11/11/1742 Hannah Drake (d. after the birth of a son, Daniel), 2nd, Martha Sterns on 6/23/1747. He had ten children by his second wife, viz: Abraham, John, Joseph, Eunice, Mary, Moses, Levi, Solomon, Zaccheus, and Benjamin who was killed during Revolutionary War. Rev. George Whitef ield converted Daniel Marshall to the Baptist Faith in 1745, and he left Windsor to work as a missionary among the Indians, about 1752. Two years later, he removed from Connecticut to Virginia. Me was an itinerant preacher, and his wanderings took him to Guilford Co., N. C. in 1755, South Carolina in 1760, and Georgia in 1770. Daniel Marshall lived in Columbia Co., Ga. and at one time was arrested for preaching "con trary to the rites of the Angilican Church." (St. Paul's Parish was under the control of the Anglican Church of England, and opposed Marshall's teachings.) Daniel Marshall was the founder of the first Baptist Church in Georgia on Kiokee Creek in 1772, located in what is now Appling 20. Daniel d. 1784, his LWT, Appling Co. naming his wife, Martha, and children:
           
      1. Eunice Marshall m. John Pittman, had two sons.    
      2. Mary Marshall m. Elias Wellborn, had nine children. LWT of Elias Wellborn names wife and ch: James Wellborn, Lucy Wellborn, R Martha Briscoe, Selina Hill.    
      3. Daniel Marshall, Jr.    
      4. Abraham Marshall 1748-1920. Children: Abraham d. young; Juban Orion, d. age 5 mos.; Jabez Pleiades m. Martha Flournoy; Jubal Orion (2nd) who removed to Alabama.    
      5. John Marshall had four daughters, removed to Louisiana.    
      6. Zaccheus Marshall, d. 1821, also a preacher. His LWT named sons: Samuel, Daniel and Elbert.    
      7. Levi Marshall m. Sarah Wynne and had a large family. His LWT dtd 1807. Children: Levi d. young; Joseph m. Sarah and had Peter and Frances; Eliza m. John Pullen; Emily m. Thomas Bayless; Sally d. young; Polly Crawford; and John who d. young.    
      8. Moses Marshall d. young.    
      9. Solomon Marshall m. Sarah Crawford, d. young.    
      10. Joseph Marshall 1765-1817. He was married three times. 1st, Elizabeth Waller b. 1787 by whom he had: Joseph, Daniel, Mary and Martha (all d. young, except Mary who m. Mr. Murray); m. 2nd, Elizabeth Edding and had one child who d. young; m. 3rd, Nancy McNeal and had four children: Joseph , Huldah, Selina and Daniel.
