FIRST GENERATION
1. Hans LORENTZ(1) was born about 1608 in Bucholtz, Chemnitz, Sachsen, Germany.1 The
LORENTZ family were Catholics in the early days, residents of Sachsen, Germany. There have
been a number of surname variations of the spellings, especially after Johannes Lorentz
emigrated to America, but the American version settled mostly on LOWRANCE.
He was married to Regina MEULLER on 19 Feb 1620 in Bucholtz, Chemnitz, Sachsen,
Germany. Regina MEULLER was christened on 21 Jul 1603 in Adelsberg, Chemnitz, Sachsen,
Germany. Children of Hans LORENTZ and Regina MEULLER were:

SECOND GENERATION
2. Hans Henrich LORENTZ was christened on 1 Feb 1628 in Bucholtz, Chemnitz, Sachsen,
Germany.

THIRD GENERATION
3. Johannes LORENTZ(2,3) was born in 1666 in Bayern, Bellheim, Pfalz, Germany.3,2 He died
in Nov 1745 in Peapack, Somerset Co., New Jersey. Apparently Johannes anglicized his name
from "Lorentz" to "Lowrance" upon arriving in America. Two of his sons, Daniel and John,
were born in America.
Johannes LORENTZ were members of the Catholic Church at Bellheim, Germany, as this is
where the first six children's baptisms were listed. By the time of the birth of the seventh child (a
son), they had become protestants, as he was baptised in the Bellheim Reformed Church at
Pfalz.
The family sailed from Holland on 55/23/1709, the ship passenger list included Johannes
Lorentz and wife, Anna Lys, Anna Margret, Magdelena and three other children. (Early
Eighteenth Century Palatine Emigration, page 248-251).
Also listing this migration was the book Journeyed from Germany to America or New World by
Ulrich Semmendinger, page 15, listing Lorentz, Johannes (12) and Anna Margaretha with six
children.

The family first appeared in New York in 1710, from Documentary History of the State of New
York, page 564. Also, the book, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, Vol. 2, page 1235 lists
as follows: Johannes Lohrentz age 43, Anna Margaretha 39, Anna Eliz 15, Magdelena 13, Anna
Barbara 11, Alexander, 1/2 years.
The Bible of Johannes Lowrance gave the birth of Alexander as 8/10/1710, and the date
of his marriage to (Margaretha) as 1691.
Johannes and his family settled on Lowrance Brook of the North Raritan River (later named
Peapack Brook) in Peapack, New Jersey, by 1720, and that this is where he built his home. The
home is reportedly still standing (remodelled in 1940). Here on this site he located a mill, which
his youngest son operated at the time of (Johannes) death.
He was married to Margaretha HEILIGER on 13 Feb 1691 in Bellheim, Catholic Church,
Bellheim, Germany. Margaretha HEILIGER was born in 1671 in Oberlusdt, Germany. She died
after 1745 in Peapack, Somerset Co., New Jersey. Children of Johannes LORENTZ and
Margaretha HEILIGER were:

to North Carolina after the death of his father, to Rowan Co., where he purchased 624 acres in
1756 from Richard and Margaret King. Date: 5/27/1756.
It is believed that Alexander LOWRANCE was killed by indians in 1759.
The Estate of Alexander LOWRANCE was admitted to probate on 10/22/1760 in Rowan Co.,
with his wife, Mary, and son, John, administrators.

LOWRANCE removed to Rowan Co., N. C. Deed, dated 9/16/1757, John Lowrance purchased
632 acres from Henry White and his wife, Joanna of Anson Fo., N. C., located on both sides of
Blyth's Creek in the fork of Second Creek, south of the Yadkin River.
Later, John's wife, Anne, sold some of the land to their son, Abraham Lowrance.
He was married to Mary PERKINS in 1738. Mary PERKINS died in 1760 in Rowan Co., North

Carolina.
He was known as "Gentleman John PERKINS" as he owned vast acreage in North Carolina and
many slaves.
John PERKINS appears in an Inventory of the Goods and Chattels of Burill GRIGG, decd, in
Anson Co., N. C. along with Avington SHERRILL, Adam SHERRILL, and Elisha PERKINS.
John PURKINS was enumerated in Anson Co., N. C. Taxables for 1763. Further evidence
of his presence there was an Anson Co., N. C. deed dated 12/10/1763, Thomas BINGHAM to
John PURKINS for 100 pds, 200 acres located on Brown Creek , beside old Catawba Path.
A Burke Co., N. C. Land Grant of 300 acres was given him on the John's River on 4/28/1778,
adjoining Samuel SIMPSON and Andrew RUDOLPH.
Lincoln Co., N. C., Court of Pleas Quarter Sessions on first Monday in April 1796...Be it
remembered that 4/6/1796 Aquilla SHERRILL, James ABERNATHY and Moses

Revolutionary
War Soldier and was a resident of Kentucky when he applied for his pension, with William
McKnight testifying as to his service record.
From his application, he said that he enlisted in 1779 and served under Capt. William
Armstrong,
that they scoured the countryside along the Deep River, thence to Shallow Ford, and Cross
Creek. In 1780, he was a minute man under Capt. William Armstrong, Col. Locke's Regt. They
marched to Rameur's Nill where Armstrong was killed. During 1779 and 1780 his company
trackedd tories. He served again in 1781, volunteering under Abel Armstrong, was in Battle of
Cowpens under Major McDowell. He was sent to guard the prisoners in Virginia where the army
received reinforcements. His company then followed Cornwallis to Hillsboro, his co. being
employed to harass the tories.
The day before the battle of Guilford Court House, his company was sent to a little creek to
remove the bridge there. They met the enemy, and were defeated. Thus, they scattered the
baggage wagons into the woods and horses, rejoining the army on Troublesome Creek.
