LAVENDER of Jones County, North Carolina


Charles Lavender, Sr. was born December of 1702. He was a resident of Amherst County, Virginia, and later in South Carolina. During the American Revolution, he served under General Washington, fighting at Valley Forge in 1777. He had 22 children, was twice married, was 6 foot, 3 inches tall, and aged 99 years, 6 months, when he died on 5 May 1802 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Drew a pension for his service. He was married in Amherst County, Virginia on 21 December 1785 to Lucy (born 1766, died Jackson County, Georgia on 14 June 1846), per his pension #W8025. At the time of his death, Lucy had only three children stillliving (Simeon, Charles and Wills). It is unknown who all of the 22 children were, and only list here as children: Simeon, Charles, Willis, John, Sr., and William, Sr.

    Lemuel Lavender - male over 16, male under 16, 6 females, 1 slave.

    Lemuel Lavender - 3 males under 10, male 10-16, male 16-26, male 26-45, female under 10, 3 females 10-16, female 16-26, female 26-45, 3 slaves.
  2. John Lavender, Sr., c. ba 1765, died July 1817, Screven County, Georgia, married Hannah. They had four sons: Elijah, John, Jr., Oliver and Levin, and named in the various estate records. On March 1817 John Lavender, Sr. deeded part of this land to his son, Oliver, and June 1817, Hannah Lavender, deeded 20 acres to John Lavender, Jr.

2. Oliver Lavender, born 1798 in North Carolina m. Mary, born 1799 North Carolina, listed on the 1850 Wilkinson County, Georgia Census.

3. Levin Lavender.

4. John Lavender was born 1787 in North Carolina, removed with his parents to Screven County, Georgia, where his father died July of 1817. Listed on 1820-1850 Wilkinson County, Georgia Census. Wife, Sarah. Issue:

1. Daniel Lavender was born 1811 married 15 February 1831 Elizabeth Hoover, born 1823.

2. John Lavender, Jr. was born 1812 married Mary Hoover.(Issue: John F. Lavender born 1842; Lewis Lavender born 1847; Walter M. Lavender born 1850; Bryan Lavender born 1852; Elizabeth Lavender born 1854). Issue:
  1. Sarah Lavender born 1831 Wilkinson County, Georgia married 11 November in Wilkinson County, Wiley G. Allen.
  2. Martha Lavender was born 1832 Wilkinson County, Georgia married 25 November 1852 Wilkinson County, Charles E. Nesmith.
  3. Hannah Lavender was born 1834 Wilkinson County, Georgia married 8 February 1852 Wilkinson County, Calloway Johnson.
  4. Elijah Lavender was born 1837 Wilkinson County, Georgia.
  5. Frances Lavender b. 1839.
  6. Mary Lavender b. 1841.
  7. John Lavender b. 1845.
  8. James Lavender b. 1846.
  9. William Lavender, b. 1848.
William Lavender, Sr., brother to John Lavender, Sr. John was executor of his brother's LWT dated 24 May 1780, Jones County, North Carolina.

William Lavender, Sr. received a Land Grant in Jones County on 16 October 1762, as evidenced by a deed dated 28 November 18342, Jones County Deeb Book 19, p. 122-125, which was between Samuel Hill and David Green, for 84 acres located on Gum Branch near Beaver Creek, north by the Trent River to Melcher Rhem's line; also a tract on the northside of the Trent River at Beaver Creek, 100 acres, which was sold by Melcher Rhem to William Lavender on 15 January 1776.

Another deed, Jones County Deed Book C, p. 45-46, 13 December 1779, William Lavender, tailor, to Jacob Koonce, planter, 200 acres on Beaver Creek in Jones County to whiteoak branch to dividing line between Jacob Rhem and Lavender.

Another deed, Jones County Deed Book B, p. 67, 18 December 1779, William Lavender, tailor, of Jones County, to Jacob Koonce, 200 acres on Beaver Creek at white oak branch, opposite a line between Jacob Rhem and William Lavender, being part of land which was granted to Melcher Rhem.

William Lavender, Sr. mentioned his children in his LWT dated 1780: Benjamin, William Lane, Levin Probart, and Melissa.

Craven County North Carolina Deeds

9 January 1779, Elisha Blackshear of Craven County, North Carolina planter, to John Lavender of Jones County, 120 acres on the southside of Black Swamp and on the northside of the Trent River on Blackshear's line. Deed Book B, p. 3.

22 December 1784, John Lavender, planter, to Lemuel Lavender, his son, gift of land at James Blackshear's line above Rocky Run down the river 1/4 mile to my back line on the southside of the Trent River, 150 acres, which was granted to John Lavender by Daniel Shrine and his wife, Barbara on 9 March 1774. 22 December 1784, John Lavender, Sr. to John Lavender, Jr. 45 acres, being the upper part of Lot 2 on the southside of the Trent River, being part of the land of Robert Perry, deceased, possessed at Waxell Perry and William Perry's line. Deed Book G, p. 368-369.

John Lavender was listed on the 1779 Jones County Tax Digest, declaring 230 acres, one negro, 3 horses, and 12 cows. Screven County, Georgia Deed

10 June 1817, Hannah Lavender to John Lavender, Jr., 20 acres, being part of 400 acres originally granted to John Roberts. This 400-acre tract was also mentioned in a deed from John Lavender, Sr. and Sarah, his wife, to their son, Oliver Lavender, dated 3 March 1817 in Screven County, Georgia.
