Key of Edgefield County, South Carolina & Jackson County, Georgia



Henry Key died 1810 in Edgefield County his LWT dated 8/18/1810, probated 9/3/1810. Wife, Pheby. Grandchildren named: Harry and Elizabeth Martin; sons-inlaw, William Thurmond and William Cabeness, as well as all of the children.

"To my three sons Henry, William and Tandy Clark Key all my lands in South Carolina to be divided amongst them as follows: my oldest son, Henry Key...lands I bought of Robert Young, 200 acres of which being granted to Thomas Richardson and about 75 acres joining down to the river branch on Turkey Creek waters of Savannah River in Granville County bounded on the Southeast on Robert Kilcrease's land when suveyed 1/15/1757....

"To my son, William Key, 200 acres bought of William Holms which was granted to John Goff in Granville County on a branch of Stephens Creek called Turkey Creek when surveyed 7/20/1754 and also 300 acres in Granville County on both sides of Turkey and Wine Creek bounded South by William Minter, East by said John Goff's grant and Southwest by John Allen and other sides vacant dated 4/7/1772....

To son, Tandy Clerk Key, 200 acres I bought of Nimrod Kilcrease granted to Robert Kilcrease in Granville County on a branch of Stephens Creek called Turkey Creek bounded by vacant lands dated 2/2/1762 and also 25 acres joins up to the water branch, being part of 100 acre survey I bought from Robert Young (and the other part to my son, Henry) and likewise I give to my youngest son all the remainder of 950 acres (after what part of it I give to my oldest daughter in Granville County on Coun Creek and Beard Creek, bounded Southwest by Callaham Yardro and Waring and vacant land, Northeast by said Key and vacant, Northwest by William Anderson dated 1/1/1773....

"To my two sons, Henry and William Keys 400 acres in Granville County on branches of Turkey Creek bounded by lands of William M.____ granted 2/5/1772....

"To son, Henry Key a Negro named Swuire; to son, William Key, a Negro boy named Moses, to son, Tandy Clerk Key a Negro boy named Cato, to daughter, Martha Key, a Negro girl named Biddy, to daughter, Naomi Key, a Negro girl Deffeney; when my three daughters become of age, my lands in Amherst to be sold; to my daughter, Mallinda Litcher; to my beloved wife, Mary Key, the following Negores: Phebe, Nan, Ponpy, also 200 acres I purchased of Nimrod Kilcrease on Turkey Creek...." Tandy Clark Key, son of Henry Key (above), resided in Burke County, Georgia in 1791, as evidenced by the following deed: 4/22/1791 Joseph Tucker, Planter of Edgefield County sold to Tandy Clark Key of Burke County, Georgia, Planter, for 25 pounds, 100 acres of land, being part of 280 acres surveyed by William Goode on 3/20/1775 and granted said Joseph Tucker on 11/5/1787, on a branch of Cuffey Town Creek in Edgefield County, bounded by lands held by Samuel Anderson and the Widow Belcher. Edgefield County Deed Book 5, pp. 140-147.

By 1820 Tandy Key was in Jackson County. Tandy Key's LWT dated 6/1836, probated 12/17/1838 was proved in Russell County, Alabama. Wife not named. Daughters: Harriett Phelps and her children; Children of daughter, Mary Mitchell, deceased; Virginia Appleby and her children.; Caroline Clark and her children; Susannah Wilson and her children.; Martha Ann Moreland and her children; Malissa and her children; Elizabeth and her children. Sons: James C., George W., Madison Troup, Tandy, Thomas Jefferson. Executors: Son, James C., John Appleby, John Wilson. Witnesses: Elisha Winn, H. Webb.

Children of Tandy Key:

  1. Harriett Key married Phelps. Harriett Phelps had a son, Tandy Key Phelps, who married Sarah Jane Thurmond on 11/11/1844 in Jackson County.
  2. Mary Key (died before 1836) married Madison R. Mitchell on 2/6/1827 in Jackson County
  3. Virginia J. Key married John Appleby on 10/14/1830 in Jackson County
  4. Caroline Key married Clark
  5. Susannah M. Key married John Wilson on 2/24/1833 in Jackson County
  6. Martha Ann Key married Jefferson C. Moreland on 12/24/1835 in Jackson County
