Jordan of Edgefield County, South Carolina & DeKalb County, Georgia

Jesse Jordan was born 1785 in Virginia and died September 1863 in DeKalb County, Georgia, buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. He was married to Rachel Bird, a daughter of Solomon Bird and his wife, Nancy of Edgefield County, South Carolina. Jesse Jordan was found on the 1810 Edgefield County, South Carolina Census. The Last Will and Testament of Jesse Jordan dated 1/14/1860, probated 9/23/1863, DeKalb County, directed that he be buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery. This is now a suburb of Atlanta, off of I-20 East. To his wife, Rachel, he bequeathed the plantation of 300 acres which was originally in Henry County, now in DeKalb. He named all of his children, plus the children of Elijah B. Jordan - "the said deceased being married the second time and Sarah Ann Crockett receiving no part of her father's estate in Florida. Son-in-law, Robert Hollingsworth, executor. It is believed that Jesse Jordan resided on Turkey Creek near the home of Elijah Bird. The creek flows into the Savannah River, so must be near Augusta.

Note: Jesse Jordan appears to be a son of William Jordan of Edgefield County, South Carolina. According to the 1810 Census, William had a son born 1800-1810, 2 sons born 1794-1800, daughter born 1800-1810 and daughter born ca 1804, William being born ca 1765 or before. Jesse (born 1785) and Joseph Jordan (born 1784-1794) were listed separately. In 1791 William Jordan was a witness to a deed in Edgefield County, and it is therefore presumed that he left Virginia when his children were young to remove to Edgefield County.
