He was the son of Greene Washington Johnson and his wife, Permelia Piper, of Georgia (son of Samuel Johnson b. Edgefield Co., S. C. and wife, Sara Hightower b. 1806 Greene Co., Ga.) They are descended from John Johnson and his wife , Elizabeth who came from South Carolina, d. Hancock Co., Ga. ca 1814. Son:
