Dr. James Edward Petaway Hunnicutt was born 28 May 1805 and resided in Dinwiddie County, Virginia; died 6 Mar 1884 in Coweta County, Georgia. In 1831 he was married to Martha Lundie Atkinson (1802-1851). Issue: William Lytleton Clark Hunnicutt, born 28 May 1834 Coweta County, Georgia, died 10 May 1910; James Benjamin Hunnicutt, born 6 May 1837 Coweta County, Georgia, died 1904; John Atkinson Hunnicutt (below); and George Hunnicutt.
John Atkinson Hunnicutt, M. D. was born 16 Sept 1838 in Coweta County, Georgia. He was a graduate of Madison College in Sharon, Mississippi in 1860. During the War Between the States, he served as a private in the GA Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia from 1861-1865. After the war he was a physician and surgeon in Coweta County from 1866 to 1870, later becoming president of Athens Ry. and Electric Co., Athens Gas Co., Athens Oil Mill, Bank of the University, Athens Savings Bank; and was director of the Northeastern R. R. and Southern Mutual Insurance Company. He was married to Mary Lewis in 1870. Issue:

- Lucy Edwin Hunnicutt, born 1874, married Emmett J. Bailey.
- Colonel Deupree Hunnicutt, born 1878, married Gabriella Lanier.
