John Jasper Hewitt
John Jasper Hewitt b. 8/2/1841, d. 2/19/1929 Jasper, FL
I searched the 1850 census indexes for NC and GA, but did not find Katherine Hewitt (or any female) as head of household. Apparently his father, John Hewitt, was in Georgia by the 1840 Macon Co. Census. At that vantage, he had one son under 5, one son
between 5 and 10, one daughter under 5.
There were Hewitts in Lowndes Co., Ga., at the time John Jasper Hewitt was there.
1869 Lowndes Co. Tax Digest
A. Hewitt, 1 poll (no of whites).
The above was Alonza Hewett who took the Oath of Office on
8/24/1868 in Lowndes Co., As Sheriff. (Lowndes Co. Minutes of
Superior Court 1858-1878, Vol. A, p. 516). Pioneers of
Wiregrass Georgia by Folks Huxford states that Caroline Lamon (b.
1837) m. Alonzo Hewitt.
Also, a divorce action:
Edward G. Hewitt vs. Lucy Hewitt, May Term 1868, Libel for
Divorce. It appearing to the court that Lucy Hewitt does not reside in
Lowndes Co. of said State....defendant to appear at the next term of
court for the case to be considered...and case be considered in
default.... (Lowndes Co. Minutes of Superior Court 1858-1878, Vol.
A, p. 509)
The 1850 Stewart Co. Census, p. 116 lists Edward Hewitt as follows:
Edward Hewitt, 38, NC
Sarah 46 or 41, NC
Edward 18, GA
Sarah 17, GA
Malissa 14, GA
Trudy 9, GA
Lucille 7, GA
John 5, GA
Will 3, GA
There is no evidence of Edward Hewitt being in Ga in 1860.
I searched for a confederate pension for John Jasper Hewitt. There
was nothing for him, however, he was a witness in 1910 and 1911 to
the pensions of R. W. Lewis and Archibald Miller in Echols Co., a
county adjacent to Florida line and Hamilton Co. Also, I searched the
Echols Co. Deeds, estates, wills, etc. for Hewitts, nothing there.

It appears that the above Armsted (Armstead) is the relative who
raised J. J. Hewitt in Lowndes Co.

JOHN HEWITT b. 10/10/1798 Jones Co., N. C., d. 2/3/1842.
You stated the tradition is that he m. Katherine Johnson. This would
have been ca 1835/1841. I searched the marriages of Jones and
Onslow Co., N. C., could not find one. Also, I searched the NC and
GA Census records for Masser Johnson (nothing found). There is a
marriage of a Catharine Johnson to Edward Lamb 5/5/1827 in Jones
Co., N. C.
The first record I was able to locate on John Hewitt in Macon Co.,
was the 1838 Tax Digest: Capt. Pierce's District, No. 814 (Garden
Valley area)
John Hewitt, 1 poll, 20, pine, Lot 73, 1st District, Macon Ga.
P. W. Hewitt, 1 poll
The records burned in 1857 Macon Co. I did search all the early time
periods in the Macon Co. Records trying to locate an estate record, or
guardianship.
John Hewitt was found on the 1840 Macon Co., Ga. Census (age
40-50), with children: one son under 5, one son between 5 and 10, one
daughter under 5.
Before 1849, his widow, Catharine, b. 1815 in Ga., had married
Thomas J. Moody, b. 1825 Ga. Her Hewitt children were found listed,
as well as a daughter she had by Moody, Mary A. Moody, b. 1849.
Listed 1850 Macon Co., Ga. Census.
Issue of John Hewitt and wife, Catherine, as follows:
- Munson Hewitt (male) b. 1835 Ga.
- Alonzo Hewitt b. 1838 Ga. Listed on 1869 Lowndes Co. Tax
Digest. Sheriff, 1868.

Issue: John Cox b. 1857, Newbon Cox b. 1858.
-
- John Hewitt b. 1841 Ga.
- Amanda Hewitt b. 1847 Ga. (This birthdate makes me question the
actual death date of John
Hewitt).
