HEARD'S were Normans from the north of France to England with William the Conquerer, granted a coat of arms with the motto: "Toujour fidele", meaning Ever Faithful. The family was granted estates in Aiglish, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. It was JOHN, the Earl of Tyrone, who migrated to America in 1719 or 1720 after a quarrel with a minister of the Established Church over the payment of his tithes, taking with him six sons and five daughters, viz: CHARLES, JOHN, JAMES, JESSE, THOMAS, and GEORGE. Stephen, his eldest son, came the following year with his wife, Lady Mary Faulkner of Wales, and d. in Pittsylvania Co., Va. 10/29/1774.
STEPHEN HEARD of Pittsylvania Co., Va. is the progenitor of the family in Georgia, some of his children having come to Wilkes Co., Ga. at an early date. Stephen's LWT was proven 11/14/1775 in Pittsylvania Co., leaving Mary, wife, all person estate. Children:
Jesse, (left the homeplace after death of his wife, Mary.) Stephen, George, Mary (left 249 acres on Black Water River), Ann Gilliam, Susannah Staneford. Wit: Peter Gilliam, Tsham Belcher, Chidle Cockerham, Robert Hughes and George Heard. Issue follows:
