Hawkins of Jones County



Benjamin Hawkins was born 1754 in Bute County (now Warren), North Carolina, died 8 June 1816 at his home Creek Agency on the Flint River in Crawford County, Georgia. He was the son of Colonel Philemon and Delia Hawkins, whose sons all served as Colonels in the American Revolution, viz; John, Philemon, Benjamin and Joseph Hawkins. Benjamin Hawkins was a member of the Senior Class at Princeton when he was selected by General George Washington to be the French interpreter on his office staff. During the Revolutionary War, Benjamin fought in the Battle of Monmouth; and served in the War of 1812. He was a member of Continental Congress in 1782. He is buried in Crawford County, on a bluff overlooking the Flint River (D. A. .R. marker). He married Lavinia Downes (1782-1858). The LWT of Benjamin Hawkins is dated 9 January 1812, probated 2 September 1816 in Jones County. Wife, Lavinia. Named his nephew, William Hawkins of North Carolina. Issue:
