Hargett/Hugett of Germany, Maryland, North Carolina and Georgia


The Hargett/Hugett family were part of the Palatines (or Germans) who began arriving in Philadelphia in 1727. Johann Henrich Hargett, the progenitor of the family in Mecklenburg and Union Counties, North Carolina, came from Germany, arriving in Philadelphia on 2 October 1749, onboard the ship Jacob. He first removed to Anson County, North Carolina. According to various land grants, it appears that he, known as John Henry Hargett in America, removed from Anson County after 1764, to Mecklenburg County to reside on a farm of 200 acres located on both sides of Stewarts fork, near the town of Monroe. John Henry Hargett and his wife, Anna, had about ten children. The LWT of Henry Hargett, Sr. was dated 28 March 1803, probated July 1803, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. All of his property, his plantation, as well as 100 acres on Stump Lick (on Richardsons Creek), etc. was left to his wife, Nanna Hargett. After her death, the whole estate was to be divided equally among his children, viz: Henry, Peter, Daniel, Joseph, Elizabeth Chaney, Rachel Pellum, Rebekah Broom, Mary Craig, Sarah Holmes and Agnes Laney. Anna died about 1810. Issue:
  • Henry Hargett, born ca 1752 in Anson County, North Carolina, died 1827. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a private under Captain Jacob Barnett in Colonel Hamptons Regiment of Light Dragoons (General Sumters Brigade of South Carolina). He married (1) a daughter of James Finley of Mecklenburg County, who died before 1782. After that he married (2) Anna Broom. His LWT was dated 25 December 1825, probated in 1827, Mecklenburg County. His left his entire plantation to his wife, Anna, then at her death to go to his son, Daniel. He had eleven children. Issue:[1]
    1. Anny Hargett, born 12 January 1780, married Eli Presley.
    2. Henry Hargett, born 23 October 1784, married (1) Isabel Presley (born 29 January 1787 in Anson County, North Carolina). They removed to Alabama in 1832, and he died in Franklin County after 1870.
    3. James Hargett, born 1770-1780, married Diana Johnston on 23 December 1800 in Mecklenburg County..
    4. Casper Hargett, born 1789 in North Carolina, farmer; listed on the 1850 Mecklenburg County Census. Wife, Prudence, was born 1802. [2] Issue:
      1. Harris Hargett, born 1826 in North Carolina, farmer. He married Martha Hall (born 1819) on 21 December 1846 in Mecklenburg County Issue:
        1. Mary Hargett, born 1847 in Mecklenburg County.
        2. Jane Hargett, born 1849 in Mecklenburg County.
      2. P. A. Hargett (son), born 1829 North Carolina. Wife, Mary, born 1834. Issue:
        1. Kolman Hargett (daughter), born 1856 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
      3. H. Morrison Hargett, born 1831 North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Harkey (born 1833 in North Carolina) on 11 September 1851 in Mecklenburg County. Issue:
        1. Prudence Hargett, born 1853 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
        2. William Brown Hargett, born December 1854 in Charlotte, North Carolina. He married Mary Nicholson.[3] Issue:
          1. Blandina Hargett, born 17 October 1877 in Charlotte, North Carolina, died 23 September 1934 in Smyrna, Cobb County, Georgia. She was married to Sanford C. Austin. SEE Austin.

      14. Charity Keziah, born 1803 in South Carolina.
    5. Peter Hargett, born 25 July 1754 in Anson County, North Carolina served in the Revolutionary Warin the Charlotte Troops of the Continental Line, under Colonel Thomas Polk. He applied for a pension in 1833, and stated that when he was about 8 or 9 years old that his parents removed to Mecklenburg County.
