Edward Hagin

CAPT. EDWARD HAGIN, Revolutionary War Soldier, b. ca 1755, in the Georgia Troops, LWT dtd 1805 Clarke Co., Ga. naming "All my children ". Returns msde on estate list heirs as Edward Hagin, Jr. and James Hagin. Also, it is obvious that Daniel Hagin was son. Edward served in Ga. Militia as Capt. of 9th Dist., Washington Co. in 1787, listed as member of Ga. Troops during Rev. War and Refugee Soldier; also served as Coroner in Washington Co. 1790 and 1792. Edward found on tax digest in Wilkes Co. of 1785 or 1787 (not dated), and other Hagins from Wilkes Co., Capt. Tooke's Dist. were: Henry, Pvt., Ga. Militia, 1813-1814 (later Capt., Appling Co., 1822-25); John, Pvt., Ga. Militia, 1813 sd dist.; Light Hagin, Pvt., 1814 sd dist.; and Stephen Hagin, Pvt., Ga. Militia, 1514, sd district. Henry Hagin was elected Justice of Inferior Court 6/1/1820 and in 1825 was appointed one of the trustees of the Poor School Fund. He apparently had a brother, James Hagin, who served in Rev. War with him, drawing land same date in Washington Co. for service as soldier. It is unknown if he had any children. James Hagin, b. ca 1765, Rev. War Soldier, drew 287-1/2 acres in Washington Co. 6/1/1784 (as did Edward) d. 1798 Greene Co., Ga., bond given by Edward and Ann Hagin, as exrs. and admrs. of est. of James Hagin, dtd 9/15/1798, will make an inventory of said estate. It is believed that James Hagin m. Rachel Annis, b. 12/8/1774, the dau. of Thomas and Alice Gayle of Virginia.

Greene Co., Ga. Deeds, Edward and Elizabeth Hagan of Wilkes Co., Ga. planter, to David Adams, for 10 pds., 187 1/2 acres, 10/13/1785.

Greene Co., Edward and Ann Hagan "of Greene Co." to William Phillips, 9/2/1798.

Issue of Edward follows:

LWT names "all my children", was b. 1752 in Wilkes Co., GA., d. after 1860 Coosa Co., A1a., m. 1st 1/8/1807 Sally Youngblood, Richmond Co., Ga., and 2d, Heardy Porch 10/29/1812 Clarke Co., Ga. Edwacd and Charles Hagin both drew in 1820 Clarke Co. lax Digest from Tredwell's Dist., land in Early Co., Ga. Edward, Jr., served as Ensign in DeKalb Co., Ga. 1829-1831, page 104.

Issue of Edward and wife, Sally:

    1. Edward Hagin, b. 8/25/1807 Clarke Co., Ga., d. 7/4/1890 Paulding Co., Ga., bur. High Shoals Cemetery, Paulding Co., m. Parthenia Scroggins, 1/13/1828. His LWT dtd 5/24/1890 Paulding Co., names wife, Marqaret and children: Henry W. Hagin, Mary J. Spinks, James T. Hagin, L. C. Forsyth, Benjamin F. Hagin, Dicy C. Hays, and Thomas C. Hagin.
    2. Elizabeth Hagin, b. 1809 Clarke Co., Ga., d. 12/22/1840 Paulding Co., Ga. m. 1823 Clarke Co., Archibald Holland, removed to Paulding Co. She is buried with her husband on the old Holland place in what was known in The old days as Huntsville, Ga. Archibald Holland was the pioneer of this area, and sil of his many children settled around him; all Hollands in that vicinity descend from him. This is my own ancestor, so I know from family folklore and my own searches that this Elizabeth was the dau. of Edward Hagin, Jr.

Issue by second wife, Heardy Porch:
  2. Elizabeth Hagin b. ca 1816 m. DeNarbus W. Hughes 7/14/1836 Coosa Co., Alabama
  3. William Hagin b. ca 1818 m. Lutitia.
  4. Mary Hagin b. 12/1820.
  5. Sherrod Hagin b. 1822 m. Mary Brewer 8/15/1839 Talladega Co., Alabama, listed 1840 Talladega Co., A1a. Census.
  6. Martha Hagin, b. 1828 Campbell Co., Ga., m. Harley Jackson Hughes 5/10/1842 Coosa Co., Alabama (Letter dtd 5/15/1980 from Mrs. Marie Hughes Rose to W. W. Boyett.)
  7. Charles B. Hagin, b. 1830 Campbell Co., Ga., m. Louisa M. Ware 10/27/1853 Coosa Co., Alabama
  8. David Hagin, b. 1833 Campbell Co., Ga., m. Y. I. Burks 10/12/1865 Coosa Co., Alabama, Confederate Soldier, serving in Co. K, 5 Alabama Infantry.
  9. James Hagin, b. 1836 Campbell Co., Ga., m. Betty Oliver.
  10. Sarah Hagin, b. 1837 Campbell Co., Ga., m. W. P. Bullard 3/20/1856, Coosa Co., Alabama
  11. Amaranth Hagin, b. 5/4/1839 Campbell Co., Ga., d. 2/24/1908 m. William Deason, b. 12/15/1839, d. 6/19/1914. on 3/31/1861, Coosa Co., Alabama Coosa County Records. V. I, Cemeteries, P. 141.
  12. DANIEL HAGIN, son of Edward, Revolutionary War Soldier, b. ca 1775/83, d. 1840, m. Martha, presumably in Georgia, though I could not find it after a thorough search of all Georgia marriage records. Daniel is listed on 1820 Walton Co., Ga. Census, and drew in the 1827 Ga. Land Lottery as Soldier, Walton Co. From 1825-30 was Lt. in Appling Co., listed 1811-21 Clarke Co. Tax Digests, and on 1830 Coweta Co., Ga. Census. The Hagins in Coweta Co. appear to be descendants of this Daniel Hagin. Therefore, it appears that Archa Hagan who married Malinda George 10/1/1835 in Coweta Co. was a son. Your record of Martha's death, 1843, Coosa Co., Alabama

  13. JAMES HAGIN, prob. son of Edward Hagin, Rev. War Soldier, was found on 1813 Clarke Co. Tax Digest, and his orphans drew from Clarke Co. in 1820 Land Lottery, land in Early Co., Ga. Bond of Jesse Roberts and Thomas Moore given 5/2/1814, Clarke Co., Est. of James Hagin, P 35, Clarke Co. admrs. (1811-39). I have searched high and low for guardianship papers on these orphans, or anything, to no avail, in Clarke Co., Ga. Usually, a guardian was not appointed, however, unless the child possessed property and was under the age of 14 yrs. His wid. apparently did not remarry, but moved on to Coosa Co., Alabama with the other Hagins. A Return for Est of James Hagin, decd for 1814, P. 302-3, Clarke Co. Invs., 1811-1828, by Jesse Roberts, admr.:

    "Money received by me
8/2/1814, Received of John P. Cary, paymaster, for service of James Hagin as a soldier $28.38. Received, amount of sales of said estate. 56.50."" In 1814, Jesse Roberts applied for Ltrs. of Admn.

The names of Edward Hagin, Revolutionary War Soldier, and his son, James, appear in the Wilkes County, Ga. records, Edward purchasing land, and James appearing on an early tax digest, one poll. This tax digest has a vague time span, anywhere from 1785 to 1795. This leaves the impression with me that James was the oldest son of Edward. The following were probably the orphans of James Hagin in Coosa Co., Alabama
    1. CHARLES HAGIN b. 1795 prob. Wilkes Co., m. Sally Pullen 7/15/1813, Hancock Co., Ga. (adjs. Washington Co. where Edward was Coroner in 1792). His son, Edward, b. 1814, listed 1830 St. Clair Co., Alabama, 1850 Talladega and 1860 Coosa Co., Alabama Census. Issue: (Bible of Charles Hagin)
    1. Edward Hagin b. 4/11/1814 d. 8/23/1866.
    2. Mary Hagin b. 12/3/1820.
    3. Elizabeth Hagin b. 9/18/1823.
    4. Martha Hagin b. 7/3/1826 d. 5/12/1877.
  14. DANIEL HAGIN b. 1794 prob. Wilkes Co., Ga., m. Elizabeth Newsome 6/1/1813 Clarke Co., Ga., who d. 1847-50 Coosa Co., A1a.), listed on the 1850 Talladega Co., Alabama Census. Probable children:
    1. REBECCA HAGIN m. Benjamin Ward 5/11/1819 Clarke Co., Ga.
    2. JAMES HAGIN, JR., listed on 1810 Clarke Co., Ga. Tax Digest, 1 poll. Voice of Sumter, published Sumter, Alabama, on 7/19/1836: "On 14th, James Hagan married Mary Martin." (A note here that James Hagans married Rebecca Martin 7/1836) Talladega Co., A1a. James A. Hagan to William Caruthers, bond, 3/11/1835, P. 89, Will Book C.
