Taxenbach, Austria. Peter Gruber, Sr. left Austria ca 1722 as a result of the Catholic church under the orers of Anton Leopold ordered all protestants out of the country. They had two weeks to pack up their things and depart. The group travelled to Holland, then England, trying to find a permanent home. In 1733, General Oglethorpe heard of their plight and welcomed them to Georgia but by that time the bedraggled group had dwindled in numbers. However, they were industrious and settled in a place selected by their leader near Savannah. The first location proved unsatisfactory. It was almost impossible to transport the group by river, the creeks were inadequate. Ultimately, they relocated to a place now called Ebenezer, Georgia.
