Grigsby of Virginia and Edgefield County, South Carolina
The Grigsby family begins in Stafford County, Virginia where their records appear in St. Paul's Parish. James Redmond Grigsby was born 1686 and died 1752 in Stafford County. He was married to Susannah Redmond (1701-1752), a daughter of William Redmond and his wife, Anne (Elkins) Redmond. Children: James Grigsby (1708-1797); Enoch Grigsby (1715-1794; Nathaniel Grigsby (1/10/1716-9/9/1801); Redmond Grigsby (4/15/1721-10/6/1809); and Samuel Grigsby (1724-8/1781), his Last Will and Testament in Leeds Parrish, Fauquier County, Virginia.
Enoch Grigsby, born 1726 in Stafford County, Virginia, St. Paul's Parish, died 1794 in Mt. Willing, Edgefield County, South Carolina. He was married in 1763 in Dittingen Parish, Prince William County, Virginia, to Mary Mollie Butler (1743- ), a daughter of William Butler and his wife, Sarah Mary (Mason) Butler. Enoch removed from Virginia to Edgefield County. A deed recorded in Edgefield County Deed Book 1, page 63, 67, dated 9/24/1789 of William Butler and Bethethland, his wife, of Edgefield County, South Carolina to Robert Allen, Jr. for 15 pounds, 60 acres on Richland Creek, a branch of the Little Saluda River, bounded Northwest by said Butler's land, Northwest and Southwest by Jacob Smith, other sides vacant when surveyed, granted on 3/3/1786. Witness: Enoch Grigsby. Enoch Grigsby apparently owned a significent number of acres in Edgefield County to be a planter as evidenced by the following deed.
Edgefield Deed Book 1, pp. 195-6. 2/19/1787. Enoch Grigsby, planter, and Russell Wilson, Esq. of Edgefield County are held bound unto Thomas Berry, planter, of the same place for 10,000 pounds. The condition of the obligation is that if the above bound Enoch Grigsby do hereby indemnify the above Thomas Berry from former leases given to the heirs of the said Enoch Grigsby for three different tracts of land containing 100 acres each, situate on Richland Creek of the Little Saludy River and that the said leases shall never come against the said Thomas Berry then the obligation is to be void otherwise to stand in full force. His LWT was dated 11/6/1789, probated January Term of 1795 in Edgefield County, naming his wife, Mary, and children: Ridon, James, Susannah Hill, Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah. Sons: James and Lodowick Hill, executors. Witnesses: William Butler, William Simkins, Sampson Butler.
