Robert was nearly twenty years old when he began his study of astronomy under his uncle Andrew Burns, who taught school at Greensboro, Ga, At the age of 21, he compiled the first almanac ever published in Georgia. Robert showed a rare aptitude for mathematics and at one time was offered the chair of mathematics at Franklin College, later University of Georgia, which he declined because his wife preferred to live in the country.
In his early life, Robert taught school and for several years in Taliaferro Co. He came to Butts County from Wilkes County in 1830, hoping that the sulphur water of Indian Springs would benefit his ailing son, Algernon Sidney. He settled on a farm about a mile and half from the Stark Community. Across the road from the home (house sill standing) lies a huge flat boulder where legend says that Robert Grier lay on his back on clear nights and made his astronomical observations and calculations to use in preparing his almanac. However, this is refuted by his descendants.
