Greene Genealogy of Rhode Island and Georgia
The Greene family established itself in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island with the arrival of James Greene from Warwick, County Kent, England. James Greene was christened on 21 June 1626 in the St. Thomas Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and died 27 April 1698 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island, being buried in the Greene graveyard. He was married to Elizabeth Anthony (born 1646, died 27 October 1698), the daughter of Joseph Anthony and his wife, Susanna (Potter) Anthony.
His son, Jabez Greene, was born 17 May 1673 in Warwick, Rhode Island and died in East Greenwick on 1 October 1741. He was married to Mary Barton (born 1 May 16788, died 6 March 1712 Kent County, Rhode Island) on 17 March 1698, the daughter of Benjamin Barton and his wife, Susannah (Gorton) Barton. Nathaniel Greene, born on 4 November 1707 in Warwick, and died October 1768, buried at the Old Friends Meeting House, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He married Mary Mott (born 25 April 1708, died 7 March 1753 in Warwick, Rhode Island, on 18 February 1739, the daughter of Jacob Mott and his wife, Rest (Perry) Mott. Nathaniel Greene was the father of the famous General Nathaniel Greene of Georgia. Major-General Nathaniel Greene was born 7 August 1742 in Potowohut, Warwick, Rhode Island, and died 10 June 1786 at his plantation Mulberry Grove in Savannah, Georgia. [1] He was married on 20 July 1774 in Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island to Catherine Littlefield (born 17 February 1755 in Block Island, Newport, Rhode Island, died 2 September 1814 on Cumberland Island, Georgia, at the plantation called Dungeness. After his death, Catherine married Phineas Miller in 1796 at Mulberry Grove, and resided at the lovely estate of Dungeness. This mansion lies in ruins today, however, its rock outline remains as a historical site. The home is approached by passing through a rock wall gateway. He and George Washington shared the distinction of being the only Continental generals which served throughout the entire War of American Independence. Greene distinguished himself in the Northern Campaign on the battlefields of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth. He also served the Army in the capacity of Quartermaster General. His greatest contribution to the war effort was as the commander of the Southern Department (1780-1783) when he successfully waged a war of attrition against the armies of the Crown at Guilford Courthouse, Hobkirk's Hill, Ninety-Six, and Eutaw Springs. The Revolutionary War fame of the service of General Greene service is still lauded in Georgia. The records reflect that he gave many land grants to veterans of the war. Issue:

- Martha Washington Greene, born 14 March 1777 in Potowohut, Warwick County, Rhode Island, died after 1802. She was married (1) to John C. Nightingale and (2) on 12 October 1810 to Dr. H. E. Turner.
- Cornelia Mott Greene was born 23 September 1779, died 1865. She married (1) Peyton Skipwith and (2) Edward Brinley Littlefield. See Littlefield.
- Nathaniel Ray Greene, born 27 January 1780 in Morristown, Rhode Island, died 11 June 1859 in Middletown, Rhode Island. He was married to Anna Maria Clarke.

General Nathaniel Greene (1742-1786)
[1] The dates recorded for Nathaniel Greene and his children vary somewhat with other dates found in other genealogies. The Family Puzzler dated 19 September 1783, No. 830, records a bible of Nathanial Greene. It belonged to Mrs. Elizabeth Adams of 4019 Calhoun Drive, Columbus, Georgia 31903, and appears to have several family names included...Nightinggale, Littlefield, Adams.
