Gillis of Montgomery County

The Gillis family originated in Scotland, went to North Carolina, and then to Georgia. I am going to speculate here and say that they probably resided in the hills of Transylvania County, North Carolina where so many Scottish clans resided before removing to Montgomery County, Georgia.

There was a Catharine Gillis, born 1754, died 17 April 1834, buried in the Gillis Cemetery, Soperton, Georgia.[1] She was presumably the wife of Norman Gillis who was listed on the 1820 Montgomery County Census. This couple was probably the parents of Roderick, John C. and Augus Gillis of Montgomery County. Montgomery County Census finds three old families.

One. Roderick Gillis, born 1779 in Scotland with two children, Alexander, age 26, born in North Carolina and Mary Ann, age 20, born in North Carolina. His LWT dated 19 December 1857, page 36, Montgomery County Will Book A. Sons: William, Neill, Malcolm, Alexander. Daughters: Flora, wife of Kenneth Murchison; Rachel, wife of Harlow Clark; Jennet, wife of Peter Morrison; Mary Ann Gillis. To: John F. Clark and Jane N. Clark (daughter of Rachel Clark). Witnesses: Murdoch Gillis, David Gillis, Jackson Grimes. Found on 1850 Montgomery County Census.

Two. John C. Gillis, born 1780 in Scotland, with children: David, age 23, Sally, age 40, Rebecca, age 25, Margarett, age 25, all born in North Carolina. Found on 1850 Montgomery County Census.

Three. ANGUS GILLIS was born ca 1775, died 1842 in Montgomery County, his LWT dated 7/9/1842:9/7/1842, p. 21, Will Book A. He mentioned his wife: Katharine. Daughters: Mary Dawson, Katharine Hampton. Christian, Sarah Ann, Margaret, Rachel, Jane Sons: Neill, Douglass, Murdoch, Angus, John, Norman (his wife, Nancy). Wife: Daniel Davis, Thomas. Wife, Catharine, was born 1777, died 17 September 1840, buried in Gillis Family Cemetery. Issue:
