Gibbons of Chatham County
William Gibbons was probably one of the largest planters in Christ Church Parish. Wife, Sarah. When he made his LWT in 1769 in Savannah, he named seven children, as well as his brothers, Joseph and John. However, his codicil dated 1771 (probated 1783) indicates that Joseph and John had since died. He bequeathed to his wife, the town lot and garden lot in Savannah which had been purchased from Charles Bowler. The lots at Yamacraw were to be divided between his children, John, Anne, Sarah, Joseph and Mary. He bequeathed his sons large parcels of land, as follows.
Joseph to receive 1500 acres of land
William to receive 1,562 acres and a water lot under the bluff or bank of the Savannah River to the East of Bull Street.
John to receive 1000 acres of River Swamp purchased from Richard Cox Sr. by Alexander Inglis and Nathaniel Hall, his attorneys.
Hannah to receive 500 acres on the southside of the Newport River adjoining the public landing at Donnoms Mill; and 200 acres of pine land (heretofore granted to Andrew Way); town lot in Savannah, purchased from William Russell, Esq.
To Sarah and Mary, 1000 acres of land lying on a branch of the Buffalo Swamp on the fourthside and near the Altamaha River
To Ann, 500 acres of land on the Lake Swamp above Fort Barrington near the Altamaha River.
