Franklin of Burke County, North Carolina


John Franklin, born 2 Jun 1727 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, died 1813/1818 in Connelly Springs, Burke County, North Carolina. His wife was Phoebe Parker (died 1821), a daughter of Nathaniel Parker. The had issue as follows:

  • John Franklin (1759-1837), see below.
  • David Franklin, born 1762.
  • Moses Franklin, born 1765 in Burke County, died Feb 1830 in Franklin County, Tennessee.
  • Jemima Franklin, born 1 Oct 1767 in Burke County, died 7 Jun 1854 in Franklin County, Tennessee, buried in the Griffin Cemetery.
  • Samuel Franklin, born 1780 in Burke County, died 1857 in Linville Falls, Burke County, North Carolina, buried in the Pisgah Cemetery.


Old Fort Stump was used during the French and Indian Wars. Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia).

John Franklin was born in 1759 near here. At that time it was Virginia. He later removed to Burke County, North Carolina where he enlisted in the Revolutionary War, serving on the North Carolina-South Carolina Line. He was married first to Polly Erwin, 2nd to Nancy on 12 Jul 1817. He died 30 Sep 1837 in the Lower Creek Area of Burke County, leaving a widow. On 23 Aug 1852 the daughter, Margaret Coleman said that she was the only heir, however, on 23 June 1853 John Sudderth, the administrator of John Franklin's estate, named as heirs the following children, viz: Abraham Franklin, Pheba Erwin and Peggy Coleman and that the other children of the soldier had removed to the far west and he had no means of knowing whether they were alive or dead.
