EDWARDS of Effingham County, Georgia



William Edwards, Sr., born ca 1741, lived in North Carolina, died 1833, Effingham County, his LWT dated 30 September 1833.
"I have already given to two sons, Beal and Obadiah, by deed the real estate and given to daughter, Chloe Downs and her eldest child, Ann Eliza, a bed and furniture and such stock of cattle as intended them to have, I exdude them all from any portion of the balance, except plantation tools which wish divided equally between said sons. Give to two other grandchildren, Catharine Caroline and Georgia Ann and Valeria Gracy, each one cow and calf. The balance be given to five daughters: Gladys, Elizabeth, Ann, Dorcas, Ruth, equally divided. Appoint Beal and Obadiah, Exrs. Wits: John Dugger, Sr., C. Powers."
He married Chloe Stokes (1744-1803), and served in Capt. Elliott's Co., Colonel Charles Pinckney's South Carolina Regiment; enlisted 1775. Also served under Colonel William Caldwell's South Carolina Regiment, drew land as a Revolutionary War Soldier in Cherokee County in 1827. Issue:

  2. Obadiah Edwards, born 12 October 1777 in South Carolina, died 14 December 1859, Effingham County, Georgia. He married 1799 Effingham County, Tabitha Pitts (24 August 1782 North Carolina-28 October 1863), daughter of John Pitts and his wife, Frances Griffin. Listed on 1830 Effingham County Census. A monument was erected by Rev. Joseph Edwards, in the Edwards Cemetery, near Lee Road (Effingham County) to the memory of -

    • Joseph C. Edwards, Rev., born 1810 married Frances, born 1808. His tombstone at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery, as follows: "Rev. J. C. Edwards, 9/4/1808-6/25/1892." Issue: 1. Aaron Edwards born 1834. 2. Tabitha Edwards born 1836. 3. Susan Edwards born 1838. 4. Sarah Edwards born 1841. 5. Martha Edwards born 1843.
    • Obadiah Winfield Edwards (youngest son) was born 27 December 1812, died 10 January 1859, Effingham County, buried at the Old Providence Cemetery, 2.1 miles north of Guyton, in Effingham County. Obadiah Edwards died 10 January 1859, Effingham County, buried at the Old Providence Cemetery, 2.1 miles north of Guyton, in Effingham County. He married Sarah Elenor (born 1813). LWT of Obadiah Edwards, dated Feb. 16, 1848, Effingham County. To two oldest sons, William Beal and Obadiah Winfield Edwards, the lands and appurtenances situated thereone known and described as my resident now, containing about 600 acres, tract of land containing 200 acres known as the Montmullier land. Desire that wife, Sarah Elenor Edwards, shall reside upon my place of residence now, bequeathed as above, until youngest son, Obadiah Winfield, becomes of age. All other lands be sold and proceeds be equally divided between wife and daughter, Caroline Eugenia, and all other future heirs of my body. To my son, William Beal, a negro girl slave named Jenny. To son, Obadiah Winifield, a negro girl slave named Ann. To daughter: Caroline Eugenia, a negro girl named Binah. Also give to wife and all children four negro slaves. Devise remainder of estate to wife and children to be divided equally between them. Appoint James E. Marlow and S. F. Keller, Executors. Wits: John W. Edwards, U. D. Osteen, Henry Love.
