Dukes of Tattnall County



John and Elizabeth Dukes received headright grants of 100 acres in Bulloch County (1809), 173 acres in Bulloch County (1819), 200 acres in Bulloch County (1819), 200 acres in Bulloch County (1819) and 140 acres in Camden County (1796). He deeded 519 acres of land in Tattnall to Jacob Carter of South Caroliina on 16 February 1809. He was listed on the 1820 Tattnall County Census with 3 males 16-18, 2 males 16-26, 2 males to 45, female to 10, female to 26, female to 26, and 16 slaves.

His LWT dated 23 June 1820, probated 5 January 1824 in Bulloch County Misc. Estates, page 144-145, mentiones his wife, and youngest chid. The Sale of the Estate dated 7 October 1828 in Tattnall County (Estates, page 335-336) included the following purchasers: Ann Dukes, Matthew C. Dukes, and Nancy Dukes. Albert M. Dukes married Permelia Smith on 17 January 1833 in Tattnall County. Tattnall County Deed Book DEF, page 19, dated 7 December 1838, Albert M. Dukes deeded to John H. Dukes, Elizabeth T. Dukes, Permelia Dukes and Albert Dukes "for good will and affection which he bears for the above grantees"Tattnall County Wills and Estates 1857-1862 one Negro girl named Betsy.
