Devereux of England, Virginia, Baldwin, Columbia and Hancock Counties

Charles Devereux, the son of Morgan Devereux and his wife, Elizabeth (Hughes) Devereux of Montgomeryshire, Wales, England, was born 1740 in Clamorganshire, Wales, and died 1805 in Wrightsboro, Columbia County, Georgia. He was a quaker, which, no doubt led him through the migratory channels, from Virginia, to Georgia. Wrightsboro was a quaker village located in (now) McDuffie County, near the present site of Thomson, Georgia. No relics of the original buildings, only an old Quaker cemetery survives. He married Nancy Woods, a daughter of Joseph Woods, in Fincastle County, Virginia 10/7/1766.[1] Issue:

• Elizabeth Devereux, born in Fincastle County, Virginia 12/7/1767, died 10/22/1830 in Baldwin County. She married Samson S. Steele on 10/18/1784.
• John William Devereux, born in Fincastle County, Virginia 3/15/1769, died 6/22/1847 in Glenfawn, Rusk County, Texas. He married Eliza Few on 4/17/1795 in Columbia County.
• James Devereux, born in Fincastle County, Virginia 10/7/1771 in Fincastle County, Virginia, died 10/20/1791, buried in the Quaker Burial Grounds, Wrightsboro, Georgia.
• Samuel McDowell Devereux, born in Fincastle County, Virginia 10/7/1773, died 10/23/1840 in Hancock County, buried in the Devereux Family Cemetery in Hancock County. He married Anna Loyd Dixon ca 1820.
• Archibald Devereux, born 8/20/1775 in Fincastle County, Virginia, died 11/18/1816 in Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth Thweatt.
• John Bowyer Devereux, born 9/7/1777 in Fincastle County, Virginia, died 1803 in Columbia County, buried on the Thweatt Plantation in Hancock County.
• Nancy Devereux, born 11/16/1779 in Fincastle County, Virginia, died 10/20/1792 in Columbia County, buried in the Quaker Cemetery.
• Charles Hughes Devereux, Jr., born 3/7/1782 in Fincastle County, Virginia, died 7/19/1817 in Mobile County, Alabama.
