Dawson of Greene County



George Dawson, Sr., the son of John Dawson, was born 1752/1760 in Lincolnshire, England. He married Katie Ruth Marsen, born 1754 in Maryland, died 1824 in Georgia. His LWT dated 20 March 1823, probated 6 July 1825, Greene County Will Book F, page 95. Grandson, George Malcom Dawson. Sons-in-law: David M. McIntosh; David Furlow; and Dr. James Mulkey. Sons, William and Thomas C. Dawson were made trustees for daughters, Elizabeth Mulkey and Ruth C. Greene. Family tradition has it that the family came from England to Virginia.[1] Issue:

Thomas C. Dawson, born 25 January 1784, died 26 February 1846, his LWT dated 3 August 1844, probated 8 September 1846, Greene County Will Book G, page 47, left his wife a tract of land "whereon I now live" and 50 acres, plus 20 negroes. To son, Reuben J., land in Cobb County now in his possession. To niece, Cordelia Rogers "shall remain with my wife." Sons: Thomas H., John R., Reubin J., James C. and William C. Son-in-law, Thomas T. F. Thweitts. He married ElizaDent of Athens. Issue:
  1. Thomas Dawson, born 25 January 1784 in Greene County, Georgia, died 26 February 1846 at Greensboro. He married on 1 December 1803 Susannah H. Rogers (died 1 October 1864), a daughter of John Rogers. Issue:
    1. George Ashley Dawson, born 12 August 1807 in Greene County, died 12 September 1829 in Warrenton, Warren County.
    2. Leonora Boykin Dawson, born 7 October 1805 in Greene County, died 23 September 1825 in Madison, Morgan County.
    3. John Rogers Dawson, born 20 December 1810 in Greene County, died 29 October 1852 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.
    4. James Crosby Dawson, born 27 October 1812 in Greene County, died May 1866.
    5. Thomas Henry Dawson, born 8 April 1809 in Greene County, died 19 June 1873 in Glenville, Alabama.
    6. Reuben Josiah Dawson, born 16 April 1816 in Greene County. Wife, Elizabeth, born 1816. Issue:
    1. John T. Dawson born 1842 Greene County.

    3. Ruth Dawson married Mr. Greene.
    4. John Dawson, born 10 May 1792 in Greene County, Georgia, died ca 1882 in Cass County. He married Elizabeth Cessna.
    5. Reuben Dawson, born 10 December 1792 in Greene County, Georgia; listed on the 1830 Campbell County Census. He married Hannah Walton Mathews (born 10 December 1791) on 13 September 1814 in Greene County. Issue:
    1. Malvina Dawson, born ca 1815.
    2. Ruth Amanda Dawson, born 1817 Greensboro, died 19 June 1883 in Gordon County., buried in the Nelson Cemetery

    • George Dawson, Jr., born 28 March 1795 in Greene County, Georgia, married Sarah Branch 17 June 1818 Greene County, Georgia. Listed on 1830 Greene County Census. Issue:
    1. George Malcomb Dawson, born ca 1819 in Greene County.
  2. William Crosby Dawson, Judge, was born 4 June 1798 in Greene County. He was a graduate of Franklin College, and was Clerk of the House of Representive for 12 years; a compiler of the Laws of Georgia; Senator in the State. Also, Capt. In a volunteer ompany during the Creek war of 1836. He was a representative to Congress 1836-1841; Judge of the Superior Court, Ocmulgee Circuit; US Senator 1849-1855. He died 5 May 1856 in Greensboro, leaving a life estate; buried at Greensboro. He married Henrietta Wingfield on 28 January 1819, in Greene County, daughter of Sydney Winfield (mother), born 1778 in North Carolina, and living with the family in Greene County in 1850. Issue:
  1. William Reid Dawson, born ca 1820 in Greene County, died at the University of Georgia, while a junior.
  2. Henry Mounger Dawson, born ca 1822 in Greene County, died 10 August 1825 Greene County.
  3. George Oscar Dawson born 1825, in Greene County, lawyer. He married (2) in 1850, Eliza M. Williams, widow of Memphis, Tennessee. He died June 1865.
  4. Henrietta Wingfield Dawson married Joseph B. Hill of Columbus.
  5. Edgar Gilmer Dawson, born 1830, law student. He married the only daughter of Dr. William Terrell of Sparta, lived in Columbus.
  6. Emma Caledonia Dawson, born 1832.
  7. Thomas Wingfield Dawson born 1838.
  8. Euphrasia Dawson (female)born 1833.
