CUMMING of Richmond County, Georgia

- Joseph Bryan Cumming, lawyer, was born February 2, 1836 in Augusta. He was admitted to the Bar in 1859, and entered the Confederacy in 1861, as a private in the Clinch Rifles, Company A, 5th Georgia Regiment, commanded by Colonel John K. Jackson; later promoted captain. During the Battle of Murfreesboro he had his horse shot out from under him; and was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. He was in the Johnston-Sherman campaign from Dalton to Atlanta in 1864, and took part in the battle of July 22. In 1870, he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives from Richmond County, later succeeded as speaker of the house. Joseph married Miss Katharine Jane Hubbell, a native of Bridgeport, Connecticut and resident of New York City, in October of 1860. Issue:

- Jane Cumming married James P. Verdery of Augusta.
- Hartford M. Cumming b. 1839 Georgia.
- Mariah B. Cumming b. 1844 Georgia.

Joseph Bryan Cummming, born 21 Feb 1826, died 15 May 1922, buried Summerville Cemetery, Augusta, Georgia.
