Cornwell of Virginia; Jasper County



Elijah Cornwell, the son of George Cornwell, was born 1760 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, died in Jasper County, Georgia on 14 November 1827. He was found on the 1790 Rowan County, North Carolina Census, but died in Jasper County, Georgia. The Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate of Elijah Cornwell, Book P, page 9-19, inventory. Purchasers were: G. W. Cornwell, Hiram Cornwell and Obediah Cornwell. George Ramsey, executor, made a return dated 31 October 1829. Heirs: Eli, Elijah and Obediah Cornwell, William Taylor, Hiram Cornwell, James Diamond, John Henry, Absalom Cornwell, Stewart and George Ramsey. The 1850 Jasper County Census lists Elijah Cornwell, aged 56, born in North Carolina. He married in 1783 Catherine Cavender (born 1764 in Massachusetts, died 19 July 1853 in Jasper County, Georgia), a daughter of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Cavender. Wife, Catharine, born 1764 in Massachusetts, was listed with the family of her son, George W. Cornwell (1850 Jasper County). In 1810 Elijah Cornwell was one of the purchasers of the estate of Thomas Loyd Jr. in Jasper County. In 1822, Elijah and Kitty Cornwell witnessed a deed dated 2/23/1822 in Jasper County by John Matox of Jasper County to Aaron Parker of Clarke County for Lot 229 in 11th district of Henry County.   5. Elizabeth Ann Cornwell, born 18 May 1839 Georgia, married Newkin Allen.
  6. Adaline F. Cornwell, born 23 May 1845 Jasper County.
  7. Lenora V. Cornwell, born 7 June 1851 Jasper County.
