Cole of Wilkes & Monroe Counties



William Cole, Sr. died in Wilkes County. His LWT named his wife, Sally and bequeathed to the children: daughter, Polly Armor (or Anne), slaves; son Renne, 100 acres on Fishing Creek adjoining George Hamilton "where I formerly lived", half of the land on the Oconee River, slaves, etc. Slaves to daughters Sally Cole, Caty Cole, Jenny Cole, Suky Cole and Betsy Gartrell. To my son, William, "land where I now live and another one half of the land on the Oconee River." Executors, wife, Sally; son, Renne Cole and friend, John Dyson. Date: 4 August 1802, probated 9 March 1803, Wilkes County (Wills 1792-1801, page 68). From Wilkes County Original Records, Estate of William Cole, Sr., deceased. Jarvis Brook and Robert Armor were appointed administrators. The 1833 Annual Return paid: Jane Smith, Robert Armor, William Edminds, Sr., David R. Hay and John Pruitt, Sr., distributes, $177 each, and retained the same, being the share of Mrs. Brooks. By sale of land in Wilkes County and by amount received of the Estate of William Cole, Sr., retained for Robert Armor and Jarvis Brook, their distributive shares. Returns for 1834; the administrators traveled to Pike County to settle a case versus James Walker.

Sarah (Sally) C. Cole, deceased. Annual Return. William Cole was appointed administrator of her estate in Wilkes County on 7 May 1827. He was paid for his part of the plat of Lot No. 192 in the 12th District of Henry County; rent for land in Jasper County 1825-1826. The same return for Sarah C. Cole, ward. Receipt of Caleb Sappington receipt for tuition for William T. Cole dated 1826; paid the latter for his distributive share in 1838. Issue:

  • Letha A. Cole, born 1833 South Carolina.
  • Mary C. Cole, born 1835.
  • James H. Cole, born 1837.
  • Delphia R. Cole (female), born 1838.
  • Elijah M. Cole, born 1842.
  • Nancy Cole, born 1845.
  • Elizabeth Angeline Cole married William J. Duke on 2 January 1845 in Monroe County.
  • Delilah J. Cole, born 1831, married William A. Taylor (born 1825) on 9 September 1849 in Monroe County.
  • Elizabeth Cole married Thomas H. Arnold.
