Coffee/Coffey of Ireland, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia
Peter Coffey, Sr. was born ca 1690/1700 in Ireland. He died after 1763 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
"Peter Coffey from Newgate (prison) to Virginia on Ship Forward Galley, received onboard October 28, 1730."[1]
He was listed as an early settler of Prince Edward County, Virginia. "Peter Coffey, 220 acres on Vaughans Creek, 20 September 1748; Peter Coffey 192 acres on Vaughans Creek, 20 September 1748."[2]
Issue:
- Joshua Coffey, born 1745 in Prince Edward County, was Captain of the Virginia Mounted Guards. He removed first to Granville County, North Carolina; listed on the 1790 Rockingham County, North Carolina Census. He married in 1769 Elizabeth Graves (born 1751, died 1804). Lieutenant Joshua Coffey served in the North Carolina Militia in 1780. Issue:
- General John Coffee, born 1772 in Prince Edward County, Virginia, married in 1809 in Haysborough, Tennessee, Mary Donelson, a niece of Mrs. Andrew Jackson.
- Rev. Joshua Coffee, born 1789 in North Carolina, died 3 October 1842 in McMinnville, Tennessee. In 1810 he married Jane Trousdale.[3]
