Colonel Thomas Cobbs
COLONEL THOMAS COBBS of Columbia Co., Ga. was b. in Virginia 1721/1724 and died in Columbia Co. Ga. in 1833 stating in his LWT that, "I have outlived them all!" He was of Welsh descent and Susannah Moon, a daughter of Jacob Moon of Buckingham Co., Virginia in 1756. Her dowry was devised to "descend to the heirs of her flesh, legally born," and among the heirs were: Thomas Cobb, Jr. (who stayed in Virginia and sued for his share of his mother's dower); John (came to Ga. with his father).
Colonel Cobbs fought in the French and Indian wars, was a Revolutionary War hero. His brother, John, preceded him in removing to Georgia (John Cobbs applied in the Land Courts of 1784-1786 for grants in Georgia). The Beckhams and Cobbs acquired large tracts of land near the Pew family. At one time there was a settlement called "Cobbham", until the Appling family prevailed and the courthouse was moved to Appling, Ga. The old gentleman was nearing his century mark when one spring day he ordered the stableboy to saddle his horse and took off across country to visit some friends. When he arrived at his destination, a servant ran out to assist him from his mount, but was testily dismissed by the Colonel, who said "Get away, boy, I've come a-courtin!" His lady friend is said to have been a lady from the wealthy and prominent Bostick family.
