Clements of North Carolina and Georgia



Peyton Clements was born ca 1731 and died in Granville County, North Carolina in 1775. The first record of his sojourn in Granville County was in November of 1765 when he sold 120 acres of land to Frances West for 50 pds. (Book G, page 29, Granville Co. Deeds). Wife was Elizabeth.

Issue:

I. David Clements, born 1770 Granville Co., N. C., died 1851 in Henry Co., Georgia. In 1820, he was listed in Putnam County Census having eleven slaves. By 1825, he had sold all of his in Putnam County and removed to Henry Co. His LWT dated 1851, page 203, Henry County, named his wife and children. He left his wife the plantation in Chambers Co., Alabama and slaves. During 1834, David Clements was executor of the estate of John Foster in Henry Co. Issue:

A. Turner H. Clements married 2/22/1842 Mary E. Elliott in Henry Co.
B. Stephen W. Clements married 10/9/1844 in Henry Co., Louisa Wyatt. He died 1857. Issue: John, Crayton, Bishop, James and Nancy Clements.

D. Elizabeth S. J. Clements.
E. Martha L. Clements.
F. Anna S. Clements.
G. Rebecca H. Clements.
H. Rebecca H. Clements married Achison Finley.

II. Jesse Clements, born 1775 Granville Co., N. C., married 1788 in Greene Co., Ga, died 1819 in Putnam County. Mary Elizabeth Coleman. Issue:

A. Jesse Clements, Jr., born 1789, died 1833 in Putnam Co., married Betsy Webb on 1/5/1809 in Oglethorpe Co.
B. Polly Clements, born 1791.
C. Anna Clements, born 1792.
D. Elizabeth Clements, born 1793.
E. Philip Clements, born 1794.
F. Gilley Clements, born 1797.
G. Nancy Clements, born 1799.
H. Peyton R. Clements, born 1806, married Martha Edmondson 9/13/1825 in Putnam Co. Issue:

  1. John Clements, born 1827.
  2. John Wesley Clements, born 1830, married ca 1854 in Muscogee Co., Georgia, Jane Smith, a daughter of Davis Smith of Monroe Co. Wesley died during the Civil War, but the Muster Rolls do not provide the date. His widow, Jane, married again after the war, this time to another Confederate Soldier (from Kentucky), Thomas Young Brent who took over her father's plantation in Monroe County after the war and established the community of Brent. Issue:
    1- William P. Clements, born 1855 in Muscogee Co., clerked in a store in Dublin. He was married on 10/28/1885 in Monroe Co. to Sallie Thweat. Issue: John Brent Clements; Julia Thweatt Clements; Jennie Brent Clements; Marie Keto Clements; George Clements; and William Clements (born 1895).
    2- Thomas Clements, born 1857 in Muscogee Co.
    3-Elizabeth Smith Clements, born 10/14/1859 in Muscogee Co., married Joel Edgar Chambliss on 4/11/1885 in Monroe Co., died 11/3/1905 in Atlanta.
  3. Asbury Clements, born 1835.
  4. Pamela Clements, born 1836.
  5. Peyton Clements, born 1840.
  6. Whitfield Clements, born 1843.
  7. Martha Clements, born 1847.
III. Peyton Clements, born ca 1775 Granville Co., N. C., married 12/1/1808 Polly Ward in Greene Co. Peyton died the May Term of 1825 in Jasper County, his LWT naming his children, viz: Wiley, Peyton, William, Harriet, Elizabeth, Polly, Mariah, Jeptha and Solomon. Also named were the heirs of Allen Clements, Harriet Allen, daughter of Lucinda Haupt and Susan Clements, heirs of son, Allen Clements. Daughter, Delilah Garrard, deceased. The estate was valued at over $11,000.00 which is a hefty sum for that era. Issue:

B. Peyton Clements, Jr., born 1794, married 9/2/1824 in Greene Co. Mary Tyler. Issue: Rebecca, born 1820; Nancy A., born 1834; John A., born 1836; Jesse V., born 1838; Wiley, born 1834; Peyton, born 1844; Elizabeth, born 1846; and William, born 1848.

IV. Philip Clements, married 10/8/1803 in Greene Co. Elizabeth. Issue: Ellis Clements, born 1792 in Greene Co. Issue: Phillip, born 1821, married 10/5/1841 in Greene Co., Sarah Blythe (issue: Elizabeth, William Bryan and Philip Clements) ; John, born 1826; Mary, born 1831; William, born 1833; Jesse, born 1835 and Jane, born 1837.

VIII. Jacob Clements died 9/1823 in Putnam Co. Issue: Christiana, Susan, Anna, Thomas L. and William Clements.

Dr. John Wesley Clements, born 1830, died during Civil War (1863), probably a member of an Alabama regiment, first husband of Jane Smith.
