Benjamin Clements was born ca 1655 and died ca 1721 in Gloucester County, Virginia. His wife was Grissell Coleman, a daughter of Robert E. Coleman and Elizabeth Grizzle. The births of their children were registered The Abington Parish. Issue:
- Elizabeth Clements, chr. 1 Dec 1678.
- Grizzell Clements, chr. Nov 1680.
- Richard Clements, chr 19 Oct 1682.
- Mary Clements, chr. 5 Jan 1683/84.
- Sarah Clements, chr. 5 Jan 1863/84.
- Grizzle Clements, chr. 1 Jan 1685/86.
- Benjamin Clements, chr. 28 Jul 1687.
- Richard Clements, chr. 27 Sept 1689, died after 1755 in Granville County, North Carolina. He is believed to have married a daughter of Thomas Peyton of Gloucester County. According to the DNA reports, Peyton Clements was the grandson of Benjamin Clements of Gloucester County through one of his sons, viz: George Clements (died 1730 Bertie County did not name a son Peyton in his LWT); Thomas Clements, bap. 22 Apr 1701 (lineage unknown); and Richard Clements found in the 1755 Tithables of Granville County, N. C. with Peyton Clements. Peyton Clements had a sister, Mary Wade, the wife of Edward Wade. The record which absolutely proves Peyton Clements to be a son of Richard Clements is a court order involving Peyton's brother-in-law, Edward Wade of Halifax County. as follows: Halifax County, Virginia Order Book, Part 1. 21 Mar 1755. William Wright vs. Richard Clements on an attachment. The Sheriff having returned that he had attached all of the defendant's effects in the hands of Edward Wade, sheriff is to sell defendant's mare and pay the plaintiff 3 shillings. Defendant did not appear. Apparently Richard Clements did not have anything much in the way of possessioons except a horse and left Halifax County, Virginia owing debt to go with his son, Peyton Clements, into Granville County, North Carolina where he was listed on the 1755 Tithables where he must have died intestate. That left Edward Wade to handle his affairs. My opinion is that Richard Clements was in declining health and first resided with his daughter, Mary Wade. See Lineage (below).
- Thomas Clements, chr. 26 May 1698.
- Thomas Clements, chr. 22 Apr 1701. Wife, Christian.
- George Clements, born ca 1695, died May 1730 in Bertie County, North Carolina. Wife, Susannah. George was not listed in the Abington Parish Register, however, proof that he was a child is found in King William County, Virginia Record Book 2 (1721-1722). 7 Nov 1721, George Clements of St. Margaret's Parish to William Aylett, 25 acres of land, being the part of the tract whereon the said Clements now resides granted by patent bearing date of 23 Oct 1703 to John Baker and conveyed by said baker to Benjamin Clements, the father of said George Clements. Susannah Clements, wife, relinquishes her dower.
