Clay of Virginia and Cobb County, Georgia

 

William Clay was born 1718 in Hanover County, Georgia and was married in Amelia County on 5/10/1756 to Ann Old.  They had issue: William, Patsy, Betty, John, Judith, Milly, Ezekiel, Hannah, Percival (1760-1828) and James (1755-1835).

Percival Pierce Clay, born 1760 in Franklin County, Virginia, died 1828 in Washington County, Georgia.  He was married to Sallie Griffin. They had issue:  Pierce, Patsy, William Monroe (1794-1857), and John.

William Monroe Clay was born 1794 in Washington County, Georgia where he died in 1857.  He was married to Mary Hardin (1798-1856), a daughter of Nicholas Hardin.  They died in their home on Buffalo Creek in Washington County.  They had issue:  Pearce, Adam, Millie (1823-9/19/1902), Sarah, Nancy, Mary, Lydia, Nicholas (1824-1902), Thomas, William James and Martha (2/14/1832=2/22/1884).

William James Clay, son of William Monroe Clay, was born 10/29/1829 on Buffalo Creek in Washington County, Georgia and died 5/22/1911.

Edna Ann Peek Clay was born ca 1830 in Washington County and married to William James Clay on 11/28/1852 in Washington County, Georgia.

Alexander Stephens Clay, son of William James and Edna Peek Clay, was born 9/25/1853 in Powder Springs, Georgia and died 11/13/1910 in Atlanta, buried in the City Cemetery of Marietta.  He was a graduate of Hiwassee College in Tennessee in 1875; admitted to the bar in 1877; and practiced law in Marietta; served on the Marietta City Council 1880-1881.  He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1887 and 1889 to 1890, and served as speaker pro tempore in 1886-1887 and 1889-1890 and was a member of the Georgia Senate from 1892 to 1894 and served as its president for his last two years in that body. In 1896 Clay was elected to the U.S. Senate and reelected twice (in 1902 and 1908). As a U.S. senator, Clay served as chair of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims and as a member of the Committee on Woman Suffrage.

He was married to Sara Frances “Fannie” White.  Issue:

 

Herbert Eugene Clay, born 1881 in Marietta, Georgia, was Mayor of Marietta 1910-1911; Solicitor General of Blue Ridge Circuit 1913-1918; President of the Georgia Senate from 1921-1923.
