Clark of Bertie County


Christopher Clark was a sea-captain and merchant in Edenton, North Carolina, came to North Carolina about 1760 from the North of England. He settled in Bertie County near the mouth of Salmon Creek and was married (1) to Elizabeth by whom he had issue, viz: Elizabeth, Mary and Sarah.

Issue:

  • Elizabeth Clark married Judge Blake Barker of Tarboro, North Carolina; no issue.
  • Mary Clark (1758-1810) married George West.
  • Sarah Clark married William Clements.

Christopher Clark married (2) Hannah Turner of Bertie County about 1778/1779, a daughter of Thomas Turner.

Issue:

  • James West Clark (1769-1845), married Arabella E. Toole (1781-1860), a daughter of Henry I. Toole of Edgecombe County. He was graduated from Princeton in 1796 and elected a member of the Legislature of Bertie County in 1802-1803. He removed to Egecombe County which he represented 1810-1811; Senator 1812-1814; elected a member of the 14th Congress 1815-1817. In 1827 he served as Chief Clerk of the Navy under Governor Branch.   • Henry Toole Clark (1808-1874); Governor of North Carolina in 1861. He was married in 1850 to Mrs. Mary Weeks Hargrove (nee Parker), daughter of Theophilus Parker of Tarlboro.
  • Maria Toole (1813-1859) married in 1852 Matt. Waddell; no issue.
  • Laura Placidia Clark (1816-1864) married in 1832 John W. Cotten.
  • Mary Sumner Clark, born 1817, married Dr. William George Thomas.
