ABSALOM HARRIS CHAPPELL
ABSALOM HARRIS CHAPPELL was b. 12/18/1801 in Hancock Co., Ga., an energetic and dynamic man who pursued his talents first in the legal profession in Sandersville, Ga. in 1821, and later became quite popular in politics.
In 1836 he lived in Macon where he was a resident for twenty years. During this period he acquired a reputation throughout the State, both in law as well as politics. He was twice elected to the tegislature and once to the Senate. In 1842, he was m. to Loretta Rebecca Lamar of Putnam Co., sister of L. Q. C. Lamar and Mirabeau B. Lamar, once President of the Republic of Texas. The same year, he was elected to Congress under the last general ticket system, and belonged to the Whig Party which was in the ascendency in the State.
In 1858 he removed to Columbus, Ga. where he retired from politics and wrote well-remembered articles such as Miscellanies of Georgia, giving history and Insight into that era of history. The fortune which he had accumulated was lost during the War Between the States, but his real interest was in politics. He loved to read and was deeply interested in the natural development of Georgia, particularly in the railroad. In Congress, he took part in the annexation of Texas and the electric telegraph. While a resident of Macon, he was active in civil affairs and while the plans for Wesleyan Female College were underway, he was on the Board of Trustees of 1836.
His home at "Glen Lora", near Columbus, was later occupied by his son, Lucius H. Chappell, a Mayor of that City.
