FIRST GENERATION
1. John CHAMBLISS was born about 1630. John Chambliss was first found in America in 1652, as per the book "Immigrants into Virginia by Nugent", as follows:
"May 5, 1652, John Chambliss settled in Northumberland County, Virginia. July 10, 1621 - Ann Chambliss transported by Richard Barrs of York County."
The Prince George County, Virginia Land Patents, Vol. 1, for 1661 to 1771, lists lands in 1680 which bordered on the land owned by Henry Chamnis. The LWT of Henry Chamnis was proved 1/9/1719 by Robert Bolling and Mary Chamnis, executors, in Prince George Co., Virginia.
The surnames "Chambliss" and "Chamnis" are alternately spelled in the records. To date, little is known about John Chambliss before he came to America, and it is only conjecture that he came from France.

SECOND GENERATION
2. Henry CHAMBLISS was born in 1660 in Prince George, Co., Virginia. He died in 1719 in Prince George, Co., Virginia. Henry Chambliss was found in the early Prince George County, Virginia records. His LWT dated 1717 stated that he was of Bristol Parish. To his son, John, he bequeathed the plantation "whereon I now live", bounded by the swamp and the Miery Branch. The town of Prince George is near the James River. Of course, Petersburg is the capitol of the county. It is presumed that he resided near the James River since most of the plantations in this area were along the James River.
Apparently Henry Chambliss owned a plantation of some size, since he directed that his son, John, who inherited the plantation, give to his brothers hundred plantable apple trees when they come of age.
Owing to the various transactions in the county, Henry Chambliss must have resided near his father-in-law, John Moor, who surrendered his worldly goods to his daughter, Mary Chambliss, widow of John, provided that she maintain him (her father, John Moor). This agreement was recorded on January 11, 1720, and was signed by John Moor and Mary Chamnis.
In February of 1720, an inventory was made of the estate of John Chambliss, so it looks like Mary's father moved into the house after the death of her husband. He was married to Mary MOOR (daughter of John MOOR) in Prince George, Co., Virginia. Mary MOOR was born about 1664 in Prince George, Co., Virginia. Henry CHAMBLISS and Mary MOOR had the following children:

He was married to Elizabeth TAYLOR (daughter of Thomas TAYLOR and Elizabeth JONES) in 1728 in Prince George, Co., Virginia. Elizabeth TAYLOR was born about 1707 in Surry Co., Virginia. FOURTH GENERATION
11. John CHAMBLISS was born about 1730 in Sussex Co., Virginia. He died about 1777 in Cheraw District, S. C. John Chambliss was born in Sussex Co., Virginia, where the family seat was for a number of years. He later inherited his father's lands in Cheraw District, South Carolina.
Sussex Co., Virginia Deed Book E, page 348 explains the circumstances:
"October 16, 1765, Benjamin Simmons of Prince George Co., Virginia, et al to James Chambliss of Sussex Co., Virginia, John Chambliss, the elder, father of James and John Chambliss, the younger."
We learn that John Chambliss was a son of John Chambliss of Sussex Co., Virginia and that he removed to Cheraw District, Marlboro Co., S. C. As per some deeds in Sussex Co., some lands of John Chambliss, Sr. were sold to settle some accounts of John Chambliss, Jr. In 1756 and 1757 he was listed as a member of the Welsh Neck Baptist Church on the Great Pee Dee River. Also listed were Lucy Chambliss and John Littleton.
April 2, 1773, John Chambliss was granted 250 acres of land in Craven Co., S. C. (Vol. 28, page 587, S. C. Archives).
John Chambliss died before 1777, for his widow, Mary Chambliss, is found in Richmond Co., Georgia (deed), also in a deed dated 1781 Warren Co., Georgia. The records of the Welsh Neck Bapttist Church in Cheraw District, S. C. note that Mary Chambliss was a member in 1778. In other words, she was still carried on the rolls a year or so after she had removed to Georgia.
July 24, 1779, John Chambliss was baptised (presumably, John Chambliss, Jr.'s son was born ca 1766). At the Long Creek Baptist Church in Warren Co., Georgia, Mary Chambliss Sr. and Mary Chambliss Jr. are listed as members (1799-1819 membership rolls) along with Littleton and Christopher Chambliss. Mary Chambliss, Sr. would be the widow of John Chambliss. Mary Chambliss, Jr. would be the daughter-in-law of Mary, Sr. and the wife of Zachariah Chambliss. This church record gives the death date of Mary Chambliss as October 14, 1817. However, the Bible of Littleton Chambliss in possession of Charles Owen Smith of Moultrie, Georgia lists her death as September 15, 1813. Presumably, the Church recorded "notification of death".
For many years I have endeavored to learn the name of Mary Chambliss, Sr. Since her first son was named Littleton, and there was a Littleton family at the Welsh Neck Baptist Church where Chambliss' were members, this surname is suspect. Too, there was a Savage Littleton found as a witness on a 1782 Warren Co., Georgia deed.

Joseph's wife, Susannah, was the daughter of Adam Jones of Warren Co. The LWT of Adam Jones probated 11/30/1830 in Warren Co., Georgia. named daughter, Susannah Chambliss.
FIFTH GENERATION
20. Christopher CHAMBLISS was born between 1760 and 1765 in Sussex Co., Virginia. He died in Sep 1840 in Bibb Co., Georgia. Christopher Chambliss was a Revolutionary War Soldier, listed between the age of 60/70 on the 1830 Bibb Co., Georgia Census. In 1785 he had Land Grants in Wilkes Co., Georgia., also in Washington Co., which he nver took up.

"Mrs. Chambliss, late of South Carolina" (obituary). The family had removed to Montgomery Co. where they were listed on the 1830 Census.

SIXTH GENERATION
30. Samuel CHAMBLISS was born in 1787 in Warren Co., Georgia. He died in 1853 in Bibb Co., Georgia. On September 22, 1810 Samuel Chambliss purchased 200 acres on Long Creek from Samuel Camp in Warren Co., Georgia. He sold out in Warren Co. in 1815, his 202 1/2 acres to Robert Carey of Jones Co. for $400.00.
At his father's death in 1840, Samuel Chambliss purchased 240 acres in Bibb Co. from his father's estate, as well as three slaves and numerous other items.
July 4, 1853, Samuel Chambliss and Jackson Chambliss gave bond for $14,000 for the goods and chattel of their father's estate (Samuel). Among the items listed were three spinning wheels, 86 hogs, saddles, a bull, oxen, 30 head of sheep, gin, and blacksmith tools, and Isaac and Rose, the negro couple which Samuel had purchased from the estate of his father, Christopher Chambliss (Estate of Samuel Chambliss dated 1853 Bibb Co., Georgia.

This was in a piece of woodland just north of the garden and orchard at the McKinney place. Three days before the death of Thomas E. Chambliss, he took up one of the jars which contained nearly $10,000 in gold, she could designate the place where the other jar was buried, but not having been there before in fifteen years, she was not at all certain as to the place. However, after a few hours search, we found it, but it proved to be all silver and only $453.16 as the old coins were counted by the banker at Forsyth."

Smith of Moultrie, Georgia.
"My grandmother, Smith Sherrod, was the daughter of Susan Walters Sherrod and Sanders Sherrod. Susan, I believe, was the oldest daughter of Jessie Walters and wife, Sarah. Smith Sherrod, b. in 1822, m. Zachariah L. Chambliss, my grandmother, in 1842, living to the advanced age of 87, dying in November 1909. During the War Between the States, Smith Sherrod Chambliss and her family suffered severly its tragic consequence. She often told of a terrifying experience of one of her aunts who suffered a severe hip wound by rifle fire in the hands of enemy soldiers.
This aunt was seated on her front porch one morning carrying on her domestic duties, and did not have the slightest information that enemy soldiers were anywhere in the community, or State. She was startled, however, on hearing a noise and looking up saw four yankee soldiers, or officers, on horseback riding toward her home, and so into the year.
She naturally was frightened and arose to go into her home when one of the enemy soldiers, taking deliberate aim at her, fired his rifle into her back, causing a severe wound and making her a cripple for the remainder of her life. The force of the rifle fire knocked her to the floor where she was found and this lady suffered the remainder of her life, necessitating her use of crutches and a cane. This war-time cruelty, according to Smith Sherrod Chambliss, was the most severe criminal offense civilized man had ever inflicted on a lady up to that time."

In the summertime, he and his wife would take the children to his wi8fe's parents plantation in Monroe Co., located at Brent, near Forsyth. They were both buried at the old Smith Family Cemetery at Brent. The plantation house on this site was torn down about 1930 and is now being used as farmland. The old Davis Smith house was a typical two story structure with square columns supporting the front porch. A lane of cedar trees led a path to the house.
My grandmother, Mary Brent Chambliss Evans, recalled visiting the old house during summer months. She also recollected that it has been necessary for the family to remove to Atlanta to obtain work, forafter the Civil War, the place was no longer a working plantation. Once, a triving community with a store and warehouse, by 1900 it could no longer support Mary Brent's mother or aunts.
Mary Brent Chambliss Evans also related the story of how Davis Smith, her great-grandfather, hid from yankee soldiers during the war. It seems that as some yankees rode up to pillage the farm, he climbed into a tree. Ironically, the soldiers pulled their steeds up under the tree where he was hiding. Davis Smith was so afraid that he heard his gold watch ticking, and feared the yankees would also hear. He survived the war by only three years, seeing his plantation in ruins.
When I first found the old Smith family cemetery at Brent, it was about 1965. My sister, Marianne, was with me in the car. "Do you want to go?" I asked Marianne. "No," she shuttered. It was a cold February day. The wind blew fiercely against my clothing as I mounted the hillside.
The site was surrounded by a flat-stone wall, obviously from the surrounding country-side. As soon as I entered, a chill went through me. I saw that the gravestone were ensnarled with thorny briars...a neglected cemetery of long years past. Yet, once so tenderly cared for during its occupants own lifetimes, with descriptive gravestones and planted flowers. I knelt at several stones, tracing my fingers over the vague indentions. Joel Chambliss and Lizzie, his wife, were there. Also, Lizzie's parents, grandparents, great aunts and uncles.
The wind howled as I descended the hill, pausing the stare across the road to the former site of the plantation. A few chaimney bricks were scattered about, and some timbers. The cedar lane was gone, as well as all outbuildings. The general store which the family owned, still operated around 1900, during Joel Chambliss' lifetime..had stood to the left of the house, near the road.
In 1830, Davis Smith owned 20 slaves..a figure which put him in the planter class. He was indeed priminent in his community, and his children flocked about him on nearby farms.
During 1850 and 1860 some of his married daughters and their husbands lived with the family in the house. Lizzie's mother, Jane Smith, had married Wesley Clements who went off to fight in the Civil War, never returning. She then married Thomas Young Brent, and that was how the community of Brent came to be. Thomas Young Brent died in the Old Soldier's Home in Atlanta, and Jane's daughter, Lizzie Clements, married Joel Edgar Chambliss and removed to Atlanta. At the time of her death, Lizzie lived on Sydney Street, an old Grant Park neighborhood in Atlanta, but at her death, her body was removed to the Smith Cemetery at Brent. He was married to Elizabeth Smith CLEMENTS (daughter of Wesley CLEMENTS and Jane SMITH) on 11 Apr 1885 in Forsyth, Monroe Co., Georgia. Proud of her heritage, she told of the piano which her grandfather, Davis Smith, brought from Charleston,S outh Carolina to their home at Brent. It was said to be the first piano in Monroe Co, where he had removed about 1824. He took his wife, Elizabeth, to Charleston, South Carolina in 1850 to hear the swedish soprono, Jenny Lind, brought to America by Barnum Bailey.
Grandmother also told of how she had a beau she wished to marry, but that her mother (Elizabeth Smith Clements Chambliss) alerted her that it was unwise to marry this beau because he was sickly; he might die at an early age, leaving her uncared for. So, she married my grandfather, Homer James Evans, who, after aged 40, fell from the rooftop of their house in Atlanta (while repairing it), and died. Thus leaving my grandmother to survive on a meager pension.
