CASTLEBERRY of Monroe County, Georgia
Jeptha J. Castleberry was born 1811 in Warren County. He removed to Monroe County and married soon thereafter Miss Susan Frances Bass (born 1821 Georgia) in Monroe County on May 16, 1837. In 1856 the family removed to Butts County, Indian Springs, where he died on April 27, 1866. Susan died July 30, 1887. They had ten children:
- Susannah F. Castleberry b. 1821 Georgia married Mr. Scarborough.
- Mary A. Castleberry b. 1838 Georgia married Mr. Tingle.
- James W. Castleberry b. 1841 Georgia.
- Martha E. Castleberry b. 1843 Georgia married Mr. Roberts.
- Jeptha J. Castleberry, Jr. b. 1845 Georgia, merchant, resided in Cabaniss, Monroe County. Served as a Confederate in the Civil War, a member of Company A, 30th Georgia Regt. He was in the Battles of Jackson, Mississippi, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge, and was with General Johnston as he retired before General Sherman. His brother was killed in a battle on July 22, 1864, dying at LaGrange on July 28. Jeptha was also wounded in this battle, in the right leg below the knee and was left lying on the field of battle. He was taken prisoner and kept within enemy's lines, most of the time at Chattanooga, until the surrender. In 1871 he bought an interest in the business, Steele, Watson & Castleberry. Jeptha married in Butts County on November 28, 1872 to Miss Maggie L., the daughter of Richard W. Willis, a pioneer citizens of Butts County.
