Caldwell of Gwinnett, Cobb and Paulding Counties

Curtis Caldwell, Sr. (ca 1735 probably in Ireland, died ca 1784 in the 96th District of South Carolina) was married to Sarah Fondren, born ca 1740 in York District, South Carolina, a daughter of John Fondren (born in Ireland) and his wife, Margaret (Edwards) Fondren. Curtis, Sr. was a Tory and was killed in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. His estate was settled on 27 August 1784 in the 96th District.[1]

Curtis Caldwell is believed to have been born ca 1769 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Curtis, Jr. was married to Sarah (born 1770 in Suth Carolina, died in Gwinnett or Paulding County). He and his wife, Sarah are enumerated with 9 of their 12 children on the 1820 Gwinnett County Census.

He resided in Gwinnett County, Georgia from 1820 to 1850; and from there removed to Cobb County and died 1852 in Paulding County where he must have recently removed. His LWT dated 28 January 1852, probated 12 March 1853, headed Cobb County, was probated in Paulding County. Curtis C. Langford[2] was executor in 1852; then his son-in-law, Lindsey Elsberry was made executor in 1853. The Returns of the estate mentioned Sarah Caldwell and his daughter, Elizabeth Elsberry. "To my wife, Sarah[3], with whom I have lived to 60 years." Heirs: John, Robert and James Caldwell, Sarah Boman, Elizabeth Elsberry, Miriam Caldwell, Maria Jones, Ursula Jones and Sibby Martin. Son-in-law, Lindsey Elsberry, was named as executor along with his nephew, Curtis Langford. [4] There is a deed of Curtis Caldwell dated 1809 in Rutherford County, North Carolina to Robert Lankford. [2] Curtis Caldwell Lankford was born 1 February 1806 in Rutherford County, North Carolina and died June of 1883. He was a son of Nathan Lankford who died 1826 in Rutherford County, North Carolina and his wife, Meron Caldwell. For this reason, I believe that Curtis Caldwell (died 1852) was a brother of Meron Caldwell (he named a daughter, Meron) and that they came from Rutherford County.

[3] Curtis Caldwell was married to Sarah in 1782, probably in Rutherford County, North Carolina

[4] Curtis C. Lankford died in Gwinnett County in 1883; C. C. Caldwell witnessed his LWT.
