Butler of Edgefield County, South Carolina



James Butler, born 1745 in Virginia and his wife, Sarah, resided on Beach Island in the New Windsor Township. Edgefield County Deed Book `, pp. 217-218. 3/3/1783. James Butler and Sarah, his wife, both late of Beach Island Township of New Windsor, South Carolina deed to Adam Hoils of the same place, planter, for 118 pounds, all rights, title and interest and claim of dower to the lands of John Shinholster, her former husband, deceased, being in Beach Island, South Carolina, New Windsor Township. Sarah appears to be his second wife.

James Butler died 5/16/1811, his LWT dated 3/14/1811, probated 6/7/1811, naming wife, Winifred. Children:

  1. Rebeccah Butler married Balentine
  2. Patsy Butler married Mosley, born 7/7/1775 in Edgefield County, died 6/18/1831 in Montgomery County, Alabama.
  3. Mary (Polly) married Shaw
  4. John Butler died before 1833.
  5. Thomas Butler
  6. James Butler, died before his father.
  7. Robert Butler died 1803, LWT dated 5/4/1803, probated 8/12/1803, naming wife, Matilda, son, Sampson Butler, and father, James Butler. Father-in-law: Reuben Cooper.
  8. Anthony Butler.
