EDWARD BUTLER



EDWARD BUTLER, Revolutionary War Soldier, and his wife, Elizabeth Wingfield, who removed from Virginia to Wilkes Co., Ga. in 1789. Wilkes Co. Deed, Daniel Butler to Benjamin Walker, 100 acres on waters of Brushy and Rocky fork of Bryer creek, it being part of the land David Butler bought of Isaac Simonson last March. 6/12/1789. The Returns on Estate of John Wingfield, decd, 1798, Wilkes Co., Ga., receipt of Edward Butler in full of his wife's legacy; of bond of William Terrell for Virginia land "of which my wife had 1/7th part; David Meriwether and Sarah Pettus, their legacy. Div. of slaves, distributees: Garland, Thomas, John Wingfield, Mary Terrell, Fatsy Foster, Sarah Pettus, Fanny Meriwether, Nancy Hull, Elizabeth Butler, Rebeccah Darracott.

Deed, Wilkes Co., Ga., Tunstall Roan and wife, Milly, to Edward Butler, 21 1/2 acres, being part of 105 acres on the waters of Beaverdam, Oct. 15, 1755. Edward Butler also owned several Other tracts of land, as is evidenced by Wilkes Co., Ga.

Estate of Edward Butler in Wilkes Co., Ga. July 7, 1817, John and David Butler, exrs. Paid Jesse Mercer $50.00 in full of subscription to Mount Enon. Division of slaves to heirs 12/30/1823, according to LWT: Ketty G. Terrell, Zacheus Butler, Frances W, Butler, William Turner, John W. Butler, Elizabeth Wingfield, Joel H. Terrell, Nancy W. Butler.

The LWT of Edward Butler probated 3/3/1810, Wilkes Co., Ga. mentions his deceased mother, Susanna Butler of Hanover Co., Virginia's LWT dated 5/20/1770 wherein she bequeathed slaves to his children. The slaves were Ben, Lew and Gill. Ben went off With Lord Cornwallis when he ravaged and plundered our settlement" in 1781 : Lewis dead, and Gillo has children and grandchildren. (bequeathed to wife, Elizabeth), Children:

  8. DAVID BUTLER m. 1/18/1816 in Hancock Co., Frances Shackelford. Accounts of estate of David B utler, Wllkes Co., n in 1824 with Frances W. Butler, admx.: Account of Minors, viz: Frances 4, Butler, for tuition, board, clothes; David E. Butler, board and clothes: Elizabeth S. W. Butler, same. Tuition was paid to Washington Academy for Frances and David. Petition to admx to sell a house on the plantation May 7, 1827. The LWT of Frances W. Butler, Wilkes Co., Ga. proved 9/3/1827, leaves all her estate to John W. Butler and Stephen G. Pettus in trust for her three children, Frances A. S. Butler, David E. B. Butler, and Elizabeth 5. W. Butler, all under age. Children:
  1. David Edward Butler b. 3/9/1818 Wilkes Co., Ga. married Virginia Walton. David atteoded Mercer Institute at Penfield, as Well as University of Virginia Law School., being admitted to practice law in March of 1840. He served three months in the campaign of 1836 against the Creek Indians. In 1850, he became a merchant in Augusta, and Jan. 1861 was ordained minister of the Madison, Ge. Church.
