Buckner of Virginia and North Carolina

Benjamin Buckner was born 1743 in Virginia, died July 1830 in Putnam County. He married Sarah Avery (born ca 1745 in Brunswick County, Virginia, died after 1830 in Putnam County). Benjamin received a land grant in Rowan County, North Carolina on Peelers Creek on 4 November 1779, for 200 acres; also a land grant in Putnam County on 3 February 1803, which land he sold in 1811 to his son, John Buckner. Issue:[1]

• Tillman Buckner, born ca 1770, died 1810 in Putnam County, married 1803 in Putnam County, Elizabeth Freeney (born 1783 in Maryland). On December 1810, Baldwin County, Archibald Devereaux was appointed guardian of the orphans of Tillman Buckner. On 3 January 1815 in Baldwin County, Elizabeth Freeny Buckner, Leonard Sims, and James Rousseau were appointed guardians of Lorenzo, Urania, Eliza and Amanda Buckner. In 1816, Enoch Underwood petitioned the court that in right of his wife, Elizabeth Buckner Underwood, he was entitle to a distributive share of the estate. Issue:

• Charles Buckner, born ca 1772, died 1817 in Putnam County, married Mary. His LWT dated 23 October 1816 in Putnam County named wife. Witness: Avery Buckner. Issue:
  1. Hiram Buckner, born 7 September 1801, died 20 October 1866. He married (1) Jane Gardner, born 1803 in North Carolina, (2) Martha Jane Griffin, born 1 June 1841, died 12 April 1863. He apparently lived in Stanfordville, Georgia, located in Jasper County near the Baldwin County Line. Listed on the 1850 Baldwin County Census, as overseer. Putnam County Deed Book P, page 126, 6 January 1835, Hiram Buckner to John Farrow, both of Putnam County, for $400, 101-1/4 acres, being tract formerly belonging to Lucretia Buckner. Issue by 1st wife:

     6. Mary Frances Buckner, born 1834 Putnam County, married 16 November 1852, Wiley Logue in Baldwin County, the son of James Logue of North Carolina and his wife, Martha (Lovett) Logue.
     7. Naomi Buckner, born 1837 Georgia.
     8. Jane Buckner, born 1840 Putnam County, died 1931.
     9. Martha Ann Buckner, born 1842 Putnam County married Ben Cureton.
     10. James Buckner, born 1845 Putnam County married Mary.

• Avery Buckner, born ca 1774, married ca 1801 Mary Daniel, daughter of Thomas Daniel and his wife, Mary (Barrow) Daniel, the daughter of John Barrow. LWT of Avery Buckner, Book B, Monroe County Wills, page 226, dated 26 March 1856, probated July 1857. Issue:
  1. Sarah Buckner married Wiley J. Harris on November 1823.
  2. Amanda Buckner married Henry Strickland on 9 July 1823.
  3. Eliza Buckner married Seaborn Ellis on 1 November 1832 in Putnam County.
  4. Parham Buckner married 1817 Eliza Ann Middlebrooks, daughter of Alfred Middlebrooks and his wife, Sarah (Ellis) Middlebrooks.
  5. Leroy Buckner married on 6 July 1839 in Monroe County, Prudence Chapman, daughter of Isaiah Chapman and his wife, Prudence J. (Slaughter) Chapman.

• John Buckner, born ca 1785, died 1820 Putnam County, married 24 June 1807 in Rowan County, North Carolina, Lucretia Daniel. Issue:
  1. Juliann Buckner, born 1808, married Coburn Wheeler.
  2. Pleasant Buckner, born 18 November 1801, married Sarah Ross, the daughter of Roland Ross and his wife, Mary (Wheeler) Ross. He died in Dade County, Alabama on 28 March 1878.
