Browning of Maryland and Monroe County, Georgia
The Browning families found in Georgia appear to come from Montgomery County, Maryland. There were also Brownings in Frederick County, Maryland who may have descendants in Georgia. Joshua Browning was born 1773 in Frederick County, Maryland and died 1829 in Georgia. Issue:
I. Benjamin Browning, born 1792 in Maryland, died before 1857 in Georgia. His children were mentioned in the LWT of his brother, Eli B. Browning, in Monroe County.

III. Eli B. Browning was born 1772 in Maryland and died December 1857 in Monroe County, Georgia. His LWT dated 2 February 1853, probated 9 December 1857 in Monroe County, Georgia named his Son: Eli J. Browning and grandchildren, the children of son, Eli J., viz...Eliza, Benjamin, B., William W., John M., James L. He also named the children of brother, Benjamin Browning, deceased, viz, Solomon, Susannah, Nancy, Melinda, Benjamin, Sallie. Executors: Archibald D. Steel, Theodocius F. Turk. The census records of 1820, 1830 and 1840 show Eli as having three daughters, one of which fits the age of Elizabeth Browning (see deed below) who married in 1837 William W. Smith in Monroe County. Eli's wife was deceased before 1850. The family was first found in Monroe County about 1822. On 2 May 1839 he purchased land on Deer Creek from Jon Taylor, in the 5th District, which flowed into the Ocmulgee River (adjoining Jones County). However, about 1822 this land was located in Twiggs County.

The following deed is a transaction between Elizabeth Browning and Marcus Culpapper dated December 1, 1835 wherein Elizabeth deeds Culpepper 202 1/2 acres in the First District of Monroe County. The significence of this deed is unknown, however, Elizabeth is listed as "Elizabeth Browning, illegitimate". The possibility is that she could have been a daughter of Eli or Benjamin Browning.
