Brown of South Carolina and Georgia



Mackay Brown was born 2/11/1797 in Habersham County, Georgia and died 3/24/1874 in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. He was married 2/22/1816 in Bedford County, Tennessee to Sally Rice (2/12/1797-5/10/1874). The family resided in Pendleton District, South Carolina until about 1841 when they removed to Georgia. Issue: Joseph Emerson Brown, born 4/15/1821 in South Carolina, died 11/30/1894 in Atlanta, Georgia, buried in Oakland Cemetery. He was the traffic manager for the Western and Atlantic Railroad and influenced the southern freight business, had a hand in opening the Muscle Shoals terminal which made Tennessee navigable throughout its length which enabled the railroad to carry pig iron, coal, marble, granite and such from the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and return laden with hematite ores from the West Tennessee mines. The central collecting point was Chattanooga. "Mr. Brown says the opening of the shoals will shiver Southern rates"[1] He was married in Pendleton District, South Carolina on 7/13/1847 to Elizabeth Gresham (7/13/1826-12/26/1896). Issue:
