John Berkner



JOHN BERKNER was b. 1805 in Germany, and was among a substantial number of Germans who resided in Bibb Co. To America, he brought his wife, Margaret, b. 1810. He was about 36 years old at the time. The family owned a farm in Bibb Co. In 1850, there were three German-born Glass brothers working for him: John, Jacob and Peter Glass. William Glass, an 11-year old boy, also lived with them, attending school. Issue:

  1. CAROLINE BERKNER b. 1842.

  2. HENRY JEFFERSON BERKNER b. 1844 m. 7/5/1893 at Macon, Ga., Huldah Elizabeth Jackson (b. 8/16/1873) who in 1940 was a resident of No. 2 Danneburg Ave. in Macon. He was buried in the Berkner Cemetery in Macon.

    He enlisted in the Confederate Service 5/12/1862, attached to Phillips Legion, Ga. Vols., Co. E, Macon Art., remaining in the war until its close and surrender of his co. May of 1865 at Greensboro, N. C. A veteran of the war, he suffered its after-effects and d. 4/9/1905, before his pension could be processed.
