Battle of Monroe County
The Battles of North Carolina and Georgia descend from John Battle of Yorkshire, England, who emigrated to Virginia about 1663, first to Nansemond County, then later settling on the Pasquotank River. His son, Elisha Battle, was born 9 January 1723 in Virginia, settled at Rocky Mountain, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was chairman of the North Carolina State Convention of 1788, and Senator from Edgecombe County for twenty years. He married Elizabeth Sumner in 1742, the daughter of John Sumner and first cousin of General Jethro Sumner, Brigadier-General of the Continental Line during the American Revolution, and the granddaughter of William Sumner of Sumner Manor, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
A descendant, Rev. Thomas Battle was born 14 August 1785 in Nash County, North Carolina, died 16 May 1883 in Monroe County. He was a son of William Battle (died 1802) and his wife, Mary Williams (born 1768, died 5 September 1816). After the death os his father, his mother was married to Mr. Arrington. Rev. Thomas Battle married Mary (Polly) Baker (born 13 June 1792, died 26 April 1864), on 17 April 1808. Thomas and Polly are buried in the old homeplace cemetery in Monroe County, located at the intersection of King and Hill Roads, off Hwy 41. Issue:
- Calvin Williams Battle, farmer, born 22 July 1812, died 11 March 1877, buried Battle Family Cemetery in Monroe County. He married (1) Sarah Ann Ranes on 18 September 1834 and (2) Harriet G. Redding (born May 28, 1829, died 28 August 1899, buried Battle Family Cemetery) on 24 January 1845 in Monroe County. Issue by 1st wife:
