Barnard of Chatham County



Edward Barnard, at his death, bequeathed his wife, Rebecca, the house and land on which Doctor Johnson lived in Augusta, and the furniture she brought when they were married, a horse, Negro wench, etc. Son-in-law: William Goodgion. Issue:

  1. James Frashier Barnard.
  2. John Barnard.


Colonel John Barnard, the son of Sir John Barnard, an English Baronet and once a Lord Mayor of London, prominent in the House of Commons, having a distinguished judicial career. Colonel Barnard married Januarye Bradley in 1743 in London, a daughter of William Bradley of Lee Street, Red Lyon Square, County of Middlesex. William Bradley, at the time of his death, owned lands in Georgia, South Carolina and Spanish bonds amounting to over 240,000 pounds. The couple came to Savannah after their marriage. Colonel Barnard established his home on Wilmington Island, having obtained a land grant.

Petition of the Commander of Mount Pleasant Garrison for Town Lott No. 4 in Third Tything in Lower New Ward (granted), This lot had been heretofore granted to Thomas Wiggins, deceased. 1 January 1745 Capt. Barnard appeared before the Board in consideration of having had 500 acres granted in in October last on Wilmington Island. He surrendered Town lot 4, third tything ward in Lower New Ward with the Garden Lott and Farm Lott heretofore granted to Thomas Wiggins, now deceased, and then granted to Barnard. 4 February 1744. Barnard, John, petitioned for 500 acres upon Wilmington Island. 9 September. 1744.

Wife: Januarye. Son, Richard was entitled to inherit 500 acres of land on Wilmington Island, as a deed of gift from Richard Kent. William, son, inherited 500 acres on Wilmington Island. The family had one Indian slave known by the name of Harry. (Last Will and Testament of John Barnard dated 29 January 1747, probated 8 September 1757, pp. 26-29, Will Book A, Colonial Wills)

Issue:

  1. Timothy Barnard was the first white man to live in what is now Macon County. He married a squaw of the Euchee Tribe of Indians, becoming a member of the tribe, thus gaining influence over the Indians. He lived on Barnards Settlement which was located on the Flint River, which took on its popularity between 1790 and 1820.

  2. William Barnard.

  3. John Barnard, Major, was born 12 November 1750 on Wilmington Island. He was a Member of the Provincial Congress in 1775 and assisted in raising the "Liberty Pole" in Savannah. During the war he was taken prisoner, and exchanged. Married Lucy Turner, the daughter of Lewis and Jeston Turner of Savannah. Issue:
  1. Timothy Barnard born 1775, married Amelia Guerard.
  2. Lucy Barnard married 1st, Henry Charles Jones, 2nd, Charles O. Screven.
  3. Mary E. Barnard

  5. James Barnard married Catherine Guerard.
  6. Henrietta Barnard married Stephen Williams.
  7. Georgia A. Barnard married Burdock Chrisolm.
