Banks of Virginia and Granville County, North Carolina

William Banks is the progenitor of the Banks family in Virginia. He was born before 1643 in England, and died after 1709 in King and Queen County, Virginia. He married Mary Tunstall, the daughter of Richard Tunstall. They had issue: James, Ralph, William and Thomas Banks.

Thomas Banks was born ca 1794 and resided in Hanover County, Virginia. He died before 25 August 1755 in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Mary Davis, the daughter of Robert and Abediah Davis of Hanover County, Virginia. Issue: Elizabeth (died March 1801 in Campbell County, Virginia); William (died 1763 in Albemarle County, Virginia); Mary; Frances; Jane; Mildred; Thomas (born 1709 in Virginia, died 23 June 1789 in Wilkes County, Georgia.

Thomas Banks, born 1709 in Virginia, died 23 June 1789 in Wilkes County, Georgia married Elizabeth Chandler. Issue:

• Justine Banks.
• Ralph Banks, born 21 October 1757 in Caroline County, Virginia, died 24 October 1823 in Elbert County, Georgia, buried in the cemetery at Coldwater Methodist Church in Elbert County.
• Betty Banks, born 21 February 1761.
• Dunstan Banks, born 26 May 1763 in Granville County, North Carolina.
• William Randd Banks, born 2 February 1766 in Granville County, North Carolina, died December 1820 in Elbert County, buried at Ruckersville.
• James Banks, born 4 August 1770 in Granville County, North Carolina, died 29 March 1836.
• John Banks, born 7 April 1774 in Granville County, North Carolina, died 1838. He married Susan Tait, a daughter of William Tait. Issue:[1]

1. Lucy Banks, born 1806 in Elbert County, Georgia, died 1847.
2. Robert T. Banks, born ca 1810 in Elbert County, Georgia, died 11 June 1857 in Jackson County, Florida.
3. William Asbury Banks, born 26 December 1812 in Elbert County, Georgia, died 19 June 1875 in Forsyth, buried in the Battle Cemetery. He married Martha E. Bryan (born 1814) on 20 December 1842 in Monroe County. Issue:

   1. John William Banks, born 25 November 1843 in Monroe County, died July 1891.
   2. Calvin William Banks, born 30 January 1846, died 2 May 1874 Monroe County, buried Battle Family Cemetery.
   3. Louisa Marion Banks, born 2 February 1848 in Monroe County.
   4. James Asbury Banks, born 14 March 1850 in Monroe County, died June 1892.

4. John Hudson Banks, born 1815 in Elbert County, Georgia, died 22 February 1884.
5. Sarah A. Banks, born 2 February 1819 in Elbert County, Georgia, died 26 April 1881.
