Avary of Columbia and DeKalb Counties

John Avary was granted a large tract of land on the Savannah River in Columbia County on 12 January 1798. His LWT dated 25 January 1813, probated 9 July 1817 in Columbia County.

Columbia County Deeds

1 January 1799. Robert Flournoy of Jefferson County to John Avary for $370.00, 244 acres of land on the waters of Loyd Creek, it being part of my "Mountain Tract", lying to the right of the road from Augusta and Lamkins to Jennings, bounded by Lamkin, Courson, Lambecker, Parkes and Meriwether.

Issue:

I. Elizabeth M. Avary married Mr. Smith.

II. Milly Avary married Mr. Ferrer.

III. Harbert Avary.

IV. Archer Avary, a judge of the Court in Columbia County, and representative to the legislature from 1815 to 1822; state senator from 1831 to 1837; and senator-elect at the time of his death in 1841. Issue of Judge Avary:

A. James Corbin Avary was a physician, and married Susan Frances Carr, the daughter of Colonel Thomas Dabney and Ann (Watkins) Carr. They had a large plantation near Decatur. Issue:

1. Robert Lee Avary was born on the Decatur plantation.

V. Asa Avary. His LWT dated 10 August 1820, probated 26 January 1823 in Columbia County. He named his sister, Patsy Welbourn; brother, Archer Avary.

VI. John Avary. His LWT dated 22 February 1827, probated 8 April 1827. Wife, Nancy. Issue:
A. Elizabeth Avary.

B. Phoebe Avary married Madison Avary on 28 July 1838 in Columbia County. Her LWT dated 23 January 1880, probated 3 May 1886 in Columbia County, naming her grandchildren: Phoebe T., Mercer I., William Madison and Irene Flanigan; father of children, James Flanigan. Son: Charles B. Avary.


VII. Patsy Avary married Mr. Wellbourn.
