Richard Anderson of Virginia

Richard Anderson, Sr., booked passage out of Port of London the same date as his son, Richard Anderson, Jr., 7/4/1635, aged 50, on the ship,Merchants Hope. The son, Richard, travelling in ship, Transport", both destinations being Virginia. Richard Anderson, Sr., b. 1585 m. 12/20/1611, Elizabeth Hawkins, daughter of William Hawkins, deceased, recorded in London Marriages, Bk II, P. 8. A Monograph of the Andersons, Clark, Marshall and McArthur Connection by Thomas McArthur Anderson:

"Ten years before this date [1635] Thomas and John Anderson, two Englishmen, came to Jamestown in the ship, Bonaventure. The next year there came Richard Anderson, age 50, in the ship Merchant Hope. He was Probably the father of Thomas and John, as Richard has been a family name in this branch ever since... The tra- dirion is that the founder of the family was Thomas Anderson of Northumberland, England, who settled as a shipwright at Gloucester Point, comes from the History of Virginia Andersons...by Mr. Brock... I received my opinion from a Colonel Robert Waller, an aged gentleman I met in Williamsburg in 1866. He told me that in his student days he had gone to William and Mary College with a relative of mine and that he had long been familiar with our family history. He said that the first Virginia Anderson was a shipwright at Gloucester Point. About the same time, General William Tollieferro pointed out a place on the west side of the Chesapeake which he said had been the first home of the Andersons."

Richard Anderson, Jr. lived in York and Gloucester Cos., Va., across the York River from New Kent Co., where the former's son, Robert Anderson, died. Notes from the Records of York County, 1/25/1646:

"Where is appearing to ye court by the Oath of Mr. Richard Anderson, Clerk, that he gave unto Thomas Hardy twoe Heifers and twoe calves for his service done for him. And that ye said Anderson made over the said cattle to George Hardy as in trust for the use of the said Thomas Hardy. And for as much as ye said Thomas Hardy hath petitioned to ye court that the said Mr. Richard Anderson might by order deliver to him the said cattle, This court doth therefore order that the said Mr. Richard Anderson to George Hardy be void and of no force against him for the said cattle." Issue of Richard Anderson, Sr., follows:

I. Thomas Anderson, b. 1616 England, migrated to Va. on ship, "Bonaventure" 2 Jan 1634. Lived on Tanks Creek at Gloucester Point, across the York River.

II. John Anderson, b. 1614 England, migrated to Virginia on ship, Bonaventure 1 January 1634. He was Member of House of Burgesses 1685 and 1686, from York Co., Virginia.

III. Richard Anderson, Jr., b. 1618 England, left London on ship, Transport, 4 July 1635, bound for Va. Gloucester Co., Va. Land Patents, "Richard Anderson--adjoining corner and land surveyed for Robert Hubbard and along the York River s.e. and n.e. on Tancks Creek. Sold to Robert Jones, who sold to Anderson, dtd 1662, 200 acres." Bk B, P. 177. Kg & Qn Co., Va. Bk 8, P. 269, 4/29/1693, Thomas Vicaries was granted 360 acres in sd co., going into the Porpotank Cr., adj. Richard Anderson. In the administration of the estate of Henry Lee, 10/26/1657, payments made to Richard Anderson for 570 pds. tobacco, York Co. Richard lived in York Co., along York River until 1662, when he patented 200 acres in Gloucester Co. He d. around 1702, when last record of him was in King and Queen Co., Va., as Justice of Peace. Issue of Richard, Jr. as follows:

A. Robert Anderson, b. ca 1640 New Kent County, Virginia, died 1712, aged abt 72 years. On Oct. 23, 1690, he took over the 727 acres in New Kent Co. which had been relinquished by his father, Richard Anderson. On the same date, he recd 1200 acres for transporting 24 persons. In 1702 he was : listed as vestryman of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., as well as 1686. He m. Cecelia, believed to be dau. of David Massie and his wife, Lucelia Poindexter, according to Historical Southern Families by Boddie, V. XV, P. 202. Issue follows: Richard; David; Matthew; John; Thomas; Nelson; Mary; Cecelia and Robert, Jr.
1. Robert Anderson, Jr. who d. 1716, aged abt 53 years. Quoting from V. XV, P. 202, I Historical Southern Families by Boddie: "On Oct. 23, 1690 he took over the 727 acres in New Kent County which had been relinquished by his father." Further, "Robert Anderson, Jr. married Mary Overton. She was born June 28, 1673, the daughter of William Overton who was born in England December 3, 1638 and married Elizabeth Waters on November 24, 1670 (daughter of Samuel and Ann Waters of London). This marriage of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters is proved by the Will of Ann Waters, widow, of the Parish of St. Sepulchre in London dated September 29, 1697 and probated Ju Iy 1 700 by her son, Thomas Wate rs ." Elizabeth Mills ca 1735, his LWT dtd 1791, naming issue [William Anderson, b. 2/1740 m. Mary Gist; Nathaniel Anderson, b. 9/1742 m. Elizabeth Carr; Cecelia Anderson, b. 8/1744, d.y.; David Anderson, b. 9/1745; and Richard Anderson, b. 6/1747 m. 1st Ann Meriwether, 2d Milly Thompson], and James Anderson, below.

James Anderson, b. ca 1690/1700, s. of Robert Anderson, Jr. lived in New Kent Co., Va. m. Mary Jordan, dau. of Mary (Browne) and George Jordan (1657-1718), describing himself in 1718 "of Prince George County" where he sold to Joshua Meacham of Surry Co., 104 acres for 4 pds., near the Nottaway River. On 14 Feb 1719 James Anderson of Surry Co. sold to Cornelius Lived at Gloucester Point, across York River. Cargite of Prince Geo. Co. for ten pds, 105 acres on Cattail Swamp in Prince George Co. He m. 2d Rebecca, dau. of William Cook of Surry Co., Va. His death in 1752 was reported in Albemarle Parish Register, P. 64. His LWT dtd 1/9/1751, pvd 1/21/1752 Surry Co. WB 1738-43, P. 745.
James Anderson of the Parish of Southwark, Surry Co., gives to his son, Thomas Anderson, books. Names son, James and wife, Rebecca. To son, John, he bequeathed 200 acres in Amelia Co., and to son, William, not aged 21. Daughters, Mary, wife of Edward Eppes; Lyddy Averiss; Priscilla and Faith Anderson. South Carolinians in the Revolution by Sara Sullivan Ervin, "John Anderson, William Anderson, and Thomas Anderson, filed Revolutionary Claims in Camden District, later Chester Co., S. C. James and Thomas appeared to be brothers. James, Sr. and his sons, John, James and William and probably Quinton, removed from the Chester area to Greenville, acquiring lands on Horse Creek, while WIlliam had lands on Rabun and Lick Creeks."

Thus, the above bears out that Thomas, James, John and William removed from Surry Co., Va to Camden Dist., S. C., and ultimately to Greenville Co., South Carolina. A great-grandson of James Anderson (John), was the son of James, and made his LWT in Greenville Co., S. C. dated 7 May 1837, naming children: William, Thomas, Ewin, John, George W., Robert, Mary Jane and David Q. Anderson. Issue of James Anderson:

8. John Anderson b. ca 1730/40 in Virginia, died 8 October 1781 m. Sarah Carney in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., Va. on 25 Nov 1752, where their three oldest children were born, i.e., Bailey, Scarlet and Sela. During the Revolution, the family passed through North Carolina, and after the war, resided on the Pacolet River in Greenville Co., South Carolina. Sarah Anderson, widow, listed on 1790 Greenville Co., S. C. Census having male over 16 years old, 4 males under 16, and 3 females under 16. John Anderson was a Minute Man entitled to 250 acres of Georgia Bounty (See South Carolinians in the Revolution); also his widow, Sarah, drew his pension in 1786.

d. John Anderson b. 1759 North Carolina, was a Pvt. in the N. C. Militia during the American Revolution; afterwards removed to Camden Dist., S. C., thence to Greenville Co. His wife was Mary. He was listed on the 1790 Greenville Co., S. C. Census, and died in Telfair Co., Ga. in 1849. Pioneers of Wiregrass by Folks Huxford, V. 5, p. 7, states that John Anderson was born 1759 in North Carolina, and resided for a time in Duplin Co., then went to Bladen Co., N. C., and his wife, Mary was born ca 1765. All of his children were born in South Carolina, except the last one. John Anderson died Oct 1849 in the home of his son, Vincent Anderson, who had removed to Telfair County ca 1822 in what is now Toombs County.
